How to unbalance a wheel
So, my wife is driving her Mercedes back from Bloomingdales (OMG I can't believe I wrote that) with me in the passenger seat (OMG I can't believe I went with her) and she doesn't bother to avoid a fairly large pothole. Right after we get over the pothole *kuh-thunk* *kuh-thunk* *kuh-thunk* *kuh-thunk* from the front passenger wheel well. Crap. I'm not looking forward to be towed from Palo Alto to San Francisco.
So we pull into a parking lot and I poke around under the front end. Nothing looks bent or broken. The *kuh-think* didn't feel hard enough to snap anything. But, I do notice the rim looks just a bit funky on the inside lip. Not really noticeable though. So I go to the driver's side and check the clearance between the rim and the strut. Its gotta be no more than 3mm when the tire is vertical. Sigh. Her brother put on these wide rims with 255/40s. 40 series tires on a 4000+ lb car with soft rims. So I get back under the car and spin the passenger wheel freely while looking up at the space between the rim and the strut. I don't hear a knock but I can see the gap is getting much smaller. I mentally mark where that happens and turn the wheel to inspect that area of the inside lip. Sure enough its just about 2mm pushed out. Damn soft wheels.
I really don't want to tow the car. I REALLY don't. So I get the tire iron and starting beating the living shizzit out of the lip where its ever so slightly bulging, wacking off slivers of metal. After about 10 minutes with my hand all numb from the vibrations ,I lower the car and test it in the parking lot. Worked like a charm!
Now, I just need a good wheel balance
