How is there no consumer protection?
Basically... I bundled my phone and direct tv up to save a few bucks. My service went to crap and my billing became a major PITA to deal with. At&t controls who gets what so half the time they wouldn't pay direct tv and all of a sudden my tv would get shut off and I'd have to make a million phone calls to fix it.
So in short... AT&T screwed up again. Then I screwed up. Then I got pissed and refused to pay. Told them to take their services and eat ****. So after an hour on the phone with AT&T today I paid the $350 I some how owed in the time I should have owed about $180. Told them to **** off. So all services turned off.
That's the end of it right... NOPE>
I called direct tv and they say... yeah all services are off. You owe us $80 for canceling your services 4 months early. I say... **** you I do. An hour later I pretty much find out that I can't do anything about it. I have to write a letter and in the meantime have a collections notice on my credit that I had no idea was coming in the first place or I would have fixed it.
So they tell me they can't overturn the fees even if they breached contract by having subpar services. I have to write a damned letter. I ask to talk to a manager and 15 minutes of being on hold later get told they're busy... after some clever questions I discovered they was ONE manager... and I should call back in a few hours or a few days and try my luck again.
Option 2 is to call AT&T and tell them to turn my tv back on. Then I pay $65 a month and have television and in 4 months I can cancel it with no fees. And supposedly AT&T has to turn it on even though it's not their company and they no longer have anything to do with it... but they turn it back on and then they're done with it. WTF is this??????
How is there no consumer protection against these shams? I'll probably end up paying the ****ing $80 to get clear of these *** hats and then I'll write a letter and hope I see the $80 back. Yeah right...
But at least it'll be done for. $400 to get rid of television and phone that I don't use... B.S.
Man I need to move to the real world where internet is available. I'll never have phone or dish as long as I live if I can help it.
AT&T is hands down the most shady POS company I have ever dealt with. I worked for them for 7 years. I got so sick of billing issues that I canceled my cell phone despite the insane deal I was getting from being an early customer and an employee. Now I'm canceling yet another service. **** them.

That's one of the main reasons why I don't have home phone service. Screw it, I would rather just use my cell phone which is a necessity anyway. Plus I think your home phone line is active, so if you have a phone plugged into it you could call 911 from it. Maybe someone who knows better can set me straight on that whether I have it right or not.
Haven't had a home phone line in over 6 years, and close to not having TV service. We tried U-Verse when we first moved in, cuz it was supposedly just as good as cable service and cheaper. It was such crap. If two people or devices were using the internet at the same time it would crawl, and the TV service was so bad I was resetting the box daily. It also ended up costing just the same as Comcast, which we ended up getting. Comcast may gouge you on the prices, but their service is so much better.

Daniel... yeah all lines are active to 911.
Yeah the phone is gone and I don't plan on starting it back up. It was like $38 a month for a phone that literally didn't get used. There wasn't even a phone hooked up to it most of the time.
The tv is B.S. If we could get internet we definitely wouldn't have it. But it's nice to have for the occasional sports game but I can go without and save the $80 a month or whatever the hell it is now... started out at $45 and some how I cut my channels in half and it's still more. We'll hold out until we move and we'll get internet and just run hulu and net flicks. Screw TV.
