actually according to the last US census there are 401800 Ryans in the US that are male and 7650 female Ryans.
also there are 127500 people with the last name Ryan in the US

So I guess you're talking about the most popular names overall, but at any given point in time certain names are incredibly popular for newborns. Ryan was really popular at one time, hence the fact that most people know a handful of Ryans. Gertrude was a popular female name at one time, but I don't know any Gertrudes. Kinda similar to how everyone knows 1000 jennys or jennifers, but it's not a highly popular name for newborns right now.

yeah thats true. i remember that i found a site a year ago when my sister was trying to come up with a name for her kid and i found a site that showed how many people were named a certain name per year. it showed what names were the most popular and all that fun stuff. pretty interesting
