donuts are best practiced in a '79 Acccord wagon that's had the roof cut off and the doors welded shut -- on bald tires. tiger stripe orange paint, astroturf floor mats and a smoking skull hood ornament are optional. at least that's what I learned to donuts in.

the best part is that i'm not even kidding. a couple of guys chipped in and bought it (not running) for $75. we spent $35 on an alternator, and it as well as long as you fed it premixed oil and gas. we upholstered the seats with empty cases of bud light, the floors with astro turf, and laid the paint on with brushes in one hand and beers (from the upholstery) in the other. the key was a flathead screwdriver. we abused it for the entire school year, and it never broke, despite rallying it on local gravel roads, spinning donuts for literally hours on end, and getting airborne over speed bumps. i have to admit, it was some of he best fun i've ever had for $20.

That is so cool. the beater car I had was a hamster-powered 88 Dodge 600 with an engine with bad valves. It was FWD and had very little power so I could only do donuts in reverse... on gravel or ice. Of course I ripped the front end off by attaching a tow-cable to the hood latch.

Oh to be young and stupid, again. Now I'm just stupid

the only reason 'the beast' as we called it, did donuts was that the tires were bald, and we had no qualms about hammering it until the motor vomitted oil, coolant or rods. some of us used reverse for donuts, others preferred trays stolen from food service, the e-brake, wet parking lots, or friends for ballast. also worth noting is that our 'insurance' policy was in fact a road flare and our full spare gas can -- though it was never used. the amazing thing is that it was so distinctive that we had many offers to buy it for up to $500.

i recall one time we drove arround the frat houses and blew up dry ice bombs in the open back of the car for kicks. young and stupid wasn't even the half of it.
