Those things scare me.

Yeah, not just the matrix has that kinda stuff..
Some pretty good science fiction dabbles in the whole AI thing. Asimov of course, Gibson, The shadownrun novelas, Heinlin, and many more...
I love those novels that take modern day technology and tweak them in a way you havent yet thought of. Good stuff....
I always thought the characters from matrix were stolen from the book Snow Crash. Hiro Protagonist as Nero. Makes too much sense... But it is probably an amalgomation of many protagonists over time.

i used to read alot of heinlin too. but recently i've been reding alot of fantsy/epic type stuff. after i re-read the LOTR trilogy, i've been reading Stephan King's Dark Tower Series. its awesome, not your typical King stuff. also been reading Niel Gaiman, after reading American Gods and The Sandman comics.

Well, since the movies are out and about the LOTR trillogy has been a great read too.. I must admit it gets better the 2nd or 3rd time through. Tolkein gets a bit wordy in certain places but he is still the master at laying down a truely EPIC saga.
Many popular fantasy authors, Goodkind, Jordan, Card, ect.. are capable fo coming up with fantasy ideas but not as skilled at telling a complete story without wandering.
My only gripe with Tolkein is his lack of realism and not fully commiting to the harsh truth of battle and the loss of life. It would have been more real if a few main characters perished along the way to emphasise how tremendous the saga was and what lengths the characters went through in the struggle. Yes, Boromir died, but that was early in the saga.. and many more intense battles ensued. As we see in the 6 books (or the trillogy in the movies) war, strife, and change brings sacrifice and loss.. it would have made more of a point if Tolkein showed that in his books.

LOTR is amazing, but Kings Dark Tower spins tales of modern fantasy. I agree though... very different from the typical blood and gore King. More character development, and more subtle changes in the script. Newest of the series comes out soon!
