My father in law wants to get a home alarm installed without monitoring.
Something basic that triggers the alarm when a window/door is broken/open. Needs 2 bull horns, 1 in the front and rear of the house.
I have a few cop friends who said monitoring is worthless as by the time they're informed of a break in, it'll take 20-30 min to even get to the house.
I checked yelp for reviews and AEC sucked big time.
Any experience with this company or other suggestions near San Jose?

I used Borges Alarms in San Jose. Great work and doesnt require monthly monitoring. At any time you can choose to have it monitored for a monthly fee for the amount of time you choose.
Dogs & Stickers make very good alarm systems.
Really though just having a dog on the premises is a good deterrent (as long as you get a medium to large dog and not a little miniature or toy sized dog).
Also just having posted a sign somewhere that says "This home is monitored by ____" or "Beware or Watch Dog" things like those tend to help prevent burglaries. Not that it is fool proof, but things like those do help.
My family did have an ADT Alarm system on our house and it worked fine. Heck if you go watch the video clips it looks like your house is protected by "The Matrix".

Being retired he couldddd have someone train a german shepherd as a guard dog or something (extremely useful/smart/obedient) and you'd be surprised how many folks who retire like to have a "man's best friend" around.

Dogs are also a liability. If you have a dog and no signs and someone comes into your property and gets bit, you can be held liable for it. Stupid law but then again we live in California.
