Just got comcast cable, $29.95 for 12 months w/ no extra fees or rental

HOLY COW this is crazy fast!!! Im glad im done with dialup once and for all, woooo!!!
Steve, I think what I like most about it is not having to wait for dialup to make the initial connection, and the download speed compared with dialup. I mean, I know there are both residential and business broadband connections that are faster than Comcast Cable but the waiting of dialup was frustrating.

It's tough to go back. Even during times when I'm trying to save money, it would be tough to drop the service and go back to dialup.

Another thing I like about all broadband services is your land line phone remains free for incoming calls. This is nice because I don't always remember to have my cellphone handy.

384 is the norm, but i have in the past requested that they crank it up if it is stable. i don't know all the factors that go into determining the speed, but one of them is distance to the CO.

anyhow, i've had the full 1.5M, 700kbps, as well as 384kbps with the three dsl accounts i've had. you're not "locked" into the speed they give you unless that is the maximum stable throughput.

Yah sbc dsl blows It's fast when it's connected, I get about 1.1 mbps. But the problem is that I can never sustain a constant line. That is, I always get dropped I use a third party router and it lags me, but I get dropped quite a bit as well. It gets really fustrating when playing multiplayer online games and you suddenly get dropped and lose all of your experience points. When I play games online, I disconnect the router and use the modem itself, but I still get dropped or can't connect at least 2 times everyday.

Me being a hater, all of you get the Up here in the mountains, we cannot get anything but dial up. I hate 56K. I have DSL modem and Nick card, just need the connection.

I get dropped like once a year w/ SBC and see about 1.25Mb all the time. My router is a Pentium I FreeBSD box that I built *shrug*

[edit] have you contacted SBC? They might have you on a bad line card.

I get a sustained 1.4 dl speed. the quality of the service depends on the subscription. If your running PPPOE that SBC DSL sucks... I have a static IP and have no problems except when the power goes out. (router is not on the UPS)

oops... lemme clarify...

384 d/l is the GUARANTEED speed by sbc.

anything higher is a bonus....

it should not drop below that. otherwise, start calling your customer service rep...
