LA preview: Subaru Impreza WRX Limited, STI Special Edition

11/24/2009, 11:29 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Ahead of their official debuts next month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Subaru has released details about two new trim packages for its popular Impreza WRX: The luxury-lined Limited and the sport-oriented STI Special Edition.

Subaru has only released one image of the STI Special Edition and none of the Limited, so you’ll have to wait for our live images from the show floor next week.
The Limited adds a leather interior, power moonroof and Sirius Satellite Radio to the basic WRX Premium model. The company has not released pricing information.

The STI Special Edition features a suspension direct from the Japanese market WRX STI spec C, meaning it gets a thicker (by 1mm) rear stabilizer bar, stiffer rear subframe bushings and stiffer springs. The first 125 WRX Special Editions will be Aspen White with 18-inch 14-spoke wheels also from the Japanese STI spec C. After those cars are produced, the Special Edition will be offered as a regular model in the Subaru lineup and will be available in a variety of colors.
The Special Edition also decontents the regular WRX STI in a few ways: HID headlamps give way to halogen bulbs, manual air conditioning takes over for automatic climate control, a basic four-speaker CD stereo comes standard rather than the 10-speaker CD changer unit and body color side mirrors replace light weight units.

Sounds like it'll be a lot of extra money for things you could buy in the after market easily.....

No motor upgrades seems stupid to me.

Only thing that seems like it might be cool is the special edition 18's. The suspension stuff is all... bah whatever. You can upgrade all of that for far less than I'm sure the dealership is gonna charge.

NEED MO POWA!

Yeah... it's similar to what they did with the Spec B. LOTS of dough for not much more than a badge.

what's so confusing? it's released initially as a special model with limited production, then it's mass produced in all the colors later on.

they did the same thing w/ the legacy spec b the 1st yr

That's a rather lame special edition... add a gang of jdm parts... exhaust.... bigger brakes... recaro seats.... different ground effects.... so much they could've done to make it special

If it was the same price as the base STi, which would u take? Better suspension over creature comforts?

Maybe it will be the basic "performance" model (the one that many of us want), and then they will have the luxury model to compete with lower end Audi, BMW, etc. I see the downgrades as an effort of catering to one audience, and containing costs to keep the STI line affordable.

I agree that the "performance" upgrades SUCK!! But if I could get an STI cheaper, without the crap I do not want, I would take it.

The USDM special edition (spec C) sounds lame... You get less stuff for more money...

You can just get a regular STi and get springs and upgraded sway bar (more then just a lame 1mm) and have a better car than the "spec C". Who's going to want to downgrade to halogen lights over HIDs? What's the weight diff of HID's vs halogen? Like a pound maximum? Just go take a **** before you go drive and have the same effect and not have to compromise a safety feature (brighter lights).

The limited edition sounds like a horrible idea and would only be a good option if you bought the said STi to turn it into a race car, otherwise it sounds lame.

It'd be good if the "Spec C" cost less then the regular STi, but knowing dealers it will cost more.
