Hit and run incident

So on Monday 9/30 around 12:25 AM my parked car was involved in a hit and run in front of my house. I know the exact time from reviewing the security footage of the cameras installed at my place. It seems to be someone my neighbor knows because the truck was parked in front of my neighbors house and the people that came out of the truck prior to having my car hit were all standing outside in front of my neighbor's house. So how this happened was the Dark colored truck was trying to back into next to my car that was parked in the designated reserve parking space. Basically, they were trying to fit two vehicles in one parking spot, not exactly sure why. They failed obviously and hit my driver side fender which led to my alarm going off. At this point the truck flees and the person that was guiding this to park next to me walks back towards the house next door. This person stays outside for a little bit and then is not in view of the camera. About 3 minutes after my car is hit two police cars show up but obviously the car is gone and no one is outside.

What I've done so far today is talk to the neighbor and try to figure out who exactly hit my car with the truck so that we could get my fender taken care of. As of right now the person responsible hasn't come forward as I assumed would happen.

So what my long post is asking the rest of the forum is advice on what I should do next. Should I file a police report? Is it too late? Since the responsible party seems to be someone my neighbor knows I'm willing to reason with them but it seems like that probably won't go anywhere. I have the footage from the security camera of the incident happening as well as the two cop cars showing up and then leaving.

Brutal sorry to hear man, I'd try to reason more with your neighbor IMO and just be cool/persistent, if nobody comes forward file the report..

If it makes you feel any better my car is overnight at Speedelement cause they potentially ****ed my power steering pump while replacing my inlet hose.. It's rough out here

I most likely will file one tomorrow or something. Probably not much can be done though, it was too dark to see license plate and the detailed faces of the people.

I think you have to file a police report if you intend to report it to your insurance company as a "hit and run." Then again it depends on if you have full coverage insurance, and if the full repair will even cost more than your deductible.

Have you confronted the neighbor with the video recording? It seems like pretty damning evidence.

File a report and talk to your insurance agent. Show them both the footage. The police should open an investigation if you can link them to your neighbor.

Warning. I dont know what im talking about from any sort of experience....

Like eveyrone said file a report, but to the "neighbor" that wont talk. It might be time to "remind" him what good neighbors do to help each other out.

Be a real shame, a real shame if his tires all went flat, or some jerk filled all the locks on his house and cars with superglue. Of course you would offer to help find the person but hey sorry you are busy, perhaps next time.

Lol I was thinking of reporting it to insurance but doubt it costs more than the deductible to fix. I most likely will report it and turn in the video of my car being hit and the car leaving and the two cop cars coming right after.

TBH, its in their best interest to fess up and (depending on damage to subie) pay up front for damages instead of going through insurance and blah blah. he wont have to go through insurance and you wont have to file a police report. thats just me tho. someone rear ended me in the scoob a year ago and other driver said he couldnt go through insurance. i asked if he had $200 to fill and repaint the spot that was damaged. he wrote me a check, it cleared, and that was that. granted fender damge is more, but u get my point. GL bro! hopefully this shmuck comes clean and its just easy going

I bet if you file a report and tell the cops that it was a friend or someone your neighbor knows (and its on tape), your neighbor might be more willing to talk to the cops.

Perhaps you can tell your neighbor that you have footage, but don’t let on that you can’t see the license plate. Tell your neighbor that you’d like to give his friend a chance to do it via insurance before your insurance gets the cops involved.

Your insurance will take care of you no matter what, so don’t worry about it. Let them be the bad guys so you stay on good terms with your neighbor.
