Lassen is a great car-camping day-hiking trip destination where Shasta is more of a serious alpine expedition type of place- at least if you're talking about summit attempts.
Both mountains and all the area up there between them, Nevada and Oregon is really awesome country to explore and play around in, lots of cool geologic stuff like lava caves, obsidian flows and all that volcano-ey stuff, and my favorite part- hundreds of miles of the best dirt roads in the state.
The road over the mountain usually is closed through May, and by July, the hike up to the top of Lassen is a friggin' parade, figure on about 2-3 hours of looking at someone's butt, but the summit is a pretty wild labyrinth of rocks so the crowds seem to disappear once you're on top.
Shasta on the other hand- like I said is pretty serious mountaineering, ice axes and crampons and all that stuff are pretty much a given any time of the year. Snow storms and avalanches also don't care what month it is on Mt Shasta, and the sheer magnitude of the climb means starting from the parking lot before 5AM to safely make the summit in a day- if you are properly equipped and trained.
But even if you aren't an experienced mountaineer you can have a really fun trip up that way, it really is one of the most overlooked and nicest areas in the state.

I'm not sure about Shasta but hiking Lassen wasn't hard. Did it with my rents when they were in their late 40's, and they aren't super fit or crazy hikers. The view was amazing though.
There are camping sites near Lassen that are reaaally nice, with a near by lake as well. enjoy the nature just wherever you go.

Never been to either. But know I want to go
I'm doing half dome this July. I have to drop a lot of lbs and get my cardio up a little more before I go. I love me some Yosemite.

Not talking about attempting the summit of Shasta, just hikes around it.
Anyway, it looks like we are going to climb Lassen after a tour of Sierra Nevada.
On the list for future trips is the circumnavigation of Shasta. That looks like fun.
