Here's little sneak peak for my BAICers
Does this deck look familiar? Well it shouldn’t, at least not yet…it’s an actual brand new 2.5 STI short block on our work bench. Gee… how did it get there?
Mind you this is just sneak peak at what we (I-Speed USA and Crawford Performance) have been up to lately. There will be more to come
Edit: In my haste to get out information to my fellow BAICers, I retardedly left out the most important information of all. All the pictures and overall block inspection and comments have been relayed to us by our motor builder Crawford Performance.
My sincere apologize for any confusion that may have caused.
Be on the look out for a web link to i-speedusa.com that will have more pictures and more Crawford Performance commentary on the 2.5 STi block!

do you guys think the STi block will hold up to high power output better than the open deck USDM EJ205?

You can get those EJ257 shortblocks for $1400 from Rennick in LA. They currently have 2 of them in stock.
Hey Chris,
What kind of revs to you think that bottom end will handle (Stock).
My idea is to bolt a set of EJ207 (STi new age EJ20) heads up to that block, and then ECUTEK a EJ207 ECU to power it.
Couple the above block to a FP20G turbo, and lookout!
Will that block handle revs to 8-8500 RPM's?
Thanks for the input!
Andy

Steppin Razor- that is a 2.2 closed deck stroked to a 2.6.
There are some similarities between the STi and other blocks but looking at a STi short block you'll notice a few details/things:
1. The depth of the top rib, it is .200 deep by .470 wide. The closed 2.2 deck is .310 deep which makes for more rigidity/ potential power.
2. The top of the rod has a taper to fit in to the piston which has wide pin bosses.
3. You can see the size of the piston pin bosses which necessitates the taper on the top of the rod when looking at the back side of the piston.
4. The STi block has a extra vent out the top. You can see it above the left piston just like the JDM 2.0 block.
5. The rods are shorter than the 2.5n/a. That will make a different rod ratio.
All in all we are not impressed with much that we see except the rod and piston. They are the two pieces that everybody will want to replace with an aftermarket part. Oh well. It will be a good block for those searching to provide that little umph that their 2.0wrx lacks.
But like most people already know...for serious power nothing beats a closed deck

Andy,
We have a similar idea. However, the STi pistons are an odd shape. They are conical (is that a word). So the heads have to be a little different to accomdate for the pistons. That is why we are awaiting STi heads to see what is really going on

Maybe custom pistons and EJ207 heads?
And redline, what is the max redline that you would expect the bottom end to hold up to?
Thanks,
Andy

Andy,
I am not saying you cannot get good power out of a semi closed. You can. However, I have yet to see a consistent reliable semi-closed beast.
Custom pistons should work with those heads. But it's not like we are rolling in the dough. We need to be careful which direction we take our R/D.
I'm not going to start guessing for the max redline...yet There are other things that should take priority.
