Helping Out a Friend with some tranny work
My friend just bought an 04 FXT but somehow the tranny got all screwed up and he needs a new one. He brought the car to Prestige Imports (subaru) and they quoted him 6k for a new tranny with labor, a bit over what he wants to pay.
Right now im trying to help him look for a new tranny for around 1k (5spd). However, we dont think it would be the greatest idea to get a dealer to do because of outragous costs. I'm looking for a couple guys that have dealt with transmissions before that could help my friend put a new transmission into his car. I personally have never done it before so i dont know if that would be a good idea.
he lives in kenwood, but if things go right with my car, we might be able to do it in my garage in a few weeks, possibly sometime after christmas. I told him that he should pay whoever could help something as a thankyou
let me know if anyone is interested. we are in Sonoma County. he is in Kenwood and i am off hwy 12 in santa rosa on the way to kenwood

Tell him to check www.car-part.com for one. I have to swap the trans in my Justy asap but dunno when I can do it since I don't have a garage and rain sucks. Good luck with it! It's tedious and irritating but not really very hard especially on a newer car. Having someone around that has done it before will really help.

Well, if only you guys were closer. I've done a couple clutches myself and a couple transmission swaps on friend's cars, I could use the extra cash but thats pretty out of the way for me.
When does this need to get done exactly?

heh i didnt catch that right away. for the record he is straight...
probably sometime in the next 2 weeks, thats just a rough guess. he is still trying to get rid of his current car first, but the sooner the better.

well im sure you can find a tranny for around a grand and then if you guys cant do it yourselves you can take i all down to LIC and have them do it. would be the same as their labor on a clutch, around 600 +/- (dont quote me) so you would get it all done for about a quarter of the dealer price without trying to fix it (**** it up more) on your own.

how screwed up is the tranny? what happened to it? can it just be fixed? if you have no idea whats wrong with the tranny maybe you should take it to a shop and let a expert handle it. you may be getting yourself in to something deeper then you think.

the subaru shop took the transmission apart. there are pieces of gears all over the place. the whole reverse gear is missing teeth and there a teeth chipped off a couple other gears, possibly from the metal going through the box.
the people there said that this happened from putting the car in reverse while moving foward. my friend, a newbie to stick, said he drove the car, stopped, put it in reverse, proceeded to try to back up. the car jumped and then it wouldnt go in reverse after that. I know my friend definetely did not put the car in reverse while moving, that would be too much for him to handle at this point (because he really is so new to manual). basically, a new transmission would be in order because the gears are totally shot (unless he can get new gears installed)
