help with vehicle registration
im looking at purchasing a vehicle from out of state... it hasnt been registered in 4 years and more than likely back fees are owed since it was not put on PNO. if i register it here in california will i have to pay the back fees?
the vehicle has not been driven on the road since it was expired and been parked on a privately owed property. is there a way around these fees?
hopefully someone will know this answer please!!!

if its out of state, DMV asks for no more than 7 days from when it was brought into the state (you probably have some wiggle room here)
but since this has never registered in CA, I am not sure about the back reg. Where is the vehicle coming from?
I know that the states have linked DMVs for violations, not sure about registration and back fees (but I can see them doing that since its more $$$ for them).
you can try this and see what number it spits out

I could be wrong here but I dont believe there is any reciprocity between states when it comes to registration fees.
Those fees were incurred by whoever held liability of that car and will need to be paid before that car can be registered in that state again.
California is only going to charge you the standard title and registration fees related to how long the vehicle has been in California.

ok so basically what i am understanding is this... if it has not been registered in california there may not be any fees regarding the transfer from one state to another...
however if it was registered in california was taken out of state with fees due and i bring it back to california i would have to pay those past due fees?

^this.
You will have to pay title/registration fees for any vehicle that you bring into CA and want to register.
There is no getting around that.
If the car has back registration fees in CA then you will have to pay those back registration fees in addition to the standard title/reg fees.
If the car has back registration fees from a different state, you most likely wont have to pay those but you will still have to pay the standard CA title/registration fees.

so basically if i find the car has back reg fees in ca dont buy it!
interesting... just out of curiosity if the vehicle has not been driven on roads and basically just been stored but not put on non op is there an affidavit that can be signed by buyer and seller that would eliminate back fees but maybe pay a fine?
i ran across a vehicle a while back here in ca like this.

Try to use this, might be for only CA purchased vehicles. Also make sure the car is CA smog compliant https://www.dmv.ca.gov/FeeCalculator...VehicleForm.do

Basically, you need to contact the DMV and check if the vehicle has been registered in CA and check with them about your other questions regarding fees for CA and from out of state. Unless one of us I-Club members works for the DMV and is quoting the rules/policy, most if not all of the information provided is hearsay/prior exp/a good guess on their part.
