help with towing??

hey guys... im sure some of you saw my thread a few weeks about my blown engine (https://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=179345). its gotten to the point now that i really need to move it and ive decided that i want to take it to GST in the near future.

with that being said, it needs to be towed quite a long distance back to my place and/or to GST in hayward.. (right now the car is sitting in front of my buddy's place out in concord).

since my AAA only covers 5 miles it was going to cost about 300 bucks to even get the thing towed back to my place and probably twice that to get it to GST so i was thinking about getting a u-haul tow bar or something like that and just taking care of it like that, but i was thinking i had read somewhere that it was a no-no to tow awd cars without a flatbed.

is there any truth to this? and if so are there any other affordable towing options out there that anyone can think of?? any recommendations are appreciated once again!

thanks guys!

Chris

yeah you need to flatbed it. Uhaul also rents flatbed trailers.

Uhaul is the way to go... I rented one and drove 400+ miles one way drop off (rented from Eureka and dropped off at Santa Cruz) for $350-$400 few years back (2003 i think). if it's in town returning back to the same store should be much cheaper. Good luck!

it doesn't have to be on flat bed, the front can be on the tow truck and the back on wheelies...

Go into triple A, tell them you want to upgrade to Plus gold or whatever level gives you enough free towing.

Wait a couple of days for your upgrade to process and then give them a call for the tow, your $300+ tow bill is now what- like $30-40 for the status upgrade?

Having messed around with tow bars trailers and dollies a time or two, I think this stuff is best left to the pros with the right gear.

We also do the AAA plus, always have 70 bucks a year is pretty cheap for what you can get out of it.

a buddy of mine told me that you have to have ONE YEAR of regular AAA service before you can upgrade to the Plus membership.
not sure if it's true, but that is what he tried to do recently on his new membership and that was the response

find a friend with the AAA premium membership that rarely uses it. If you have a friend that is towards the end of his 12 month period ask if you can use one of his tows. I did that with my girlfriend's car and my membership for a 60 mile tow. The premium membersip is always good to have though, they'll reimburse ambulance rides if you're in an accident and your health inssurance pulls that "not preapproved" crap

hmmm... yeah ive had AAA for years but ive only had the basic because ive only needed it for jump-starts and lock outs etc. sounds like i need to call in and see about an upgrade, i wonder if i can switch back after a year or so though, i dont see myself needing this service every again.... unless my engine was to blow again!!

AAA plus can also be 200 miles after you don't use the 100 miles for a year. Then after that you can go to unlimited.

I have a triple A card with 100 miles on it you can use, give us a call at the shop to arrange it we should be able to get this sorted for you fairly quickly.
