help with a laptop

my fiance has an HP and its like 4 yrs old.

It got a virus and couldnt get it off by the suggested program to remove it. Sent it to a fellow iclubber and they wiped it out, so now starting fresh.

Need to install the XP OS. But theres a few problems...

-Her cd disc drive does not work (Frys does not carry them instore or online)
-her laptop is too old and wont boot from a usb port (so cant load the OS from a flash drive)
-her HD is a PATA so it wont plug into my computer

So i bought a PATA shell and put her HD into it so now its acting as an external HD. Now I need to somehow load XP onto it thru my laptop or another computer. Anyone know how to do such a thing? I know it can by done by searching google but I think it might be beyond my capabilities

Take out the CD drive and try another one from a different laptop, they should be the same size. If it doesn't fit, it probably has an adapter on the back of the drive or you just need to take the face off of the tray. Some of them have rails that you need to take off or put on in order for it to fit. Good luck, you're doing too much work if you're trying to install XP on a completely different computer in hopes of getting the drive to work on the laptop there after - it won't work, sorry.

I think you can just install another copy of windows onto the drive and it'll just make your computer think you have a dual boot.

I'm missing something here, it won't boot off of USB, then it has a floppy drive? How I would do it.

1. Buy USB CD ROM drive. She'll need this to load all the other software too.
2. Win 98 boot diskette.
3. Install XP from external CD ROM.

well thats what i was telling her... you can get a brand new tiny net book for like $300.... so its like do you spend $75-100 on the old one or just save up for a new one?

She likes the comp and said this should be the last part shes buys for it... after that its donezo haha
