you've got to hit it pretty damn hard. use a deadblow hammer, or a mallet. i had to pound on mine for a bit before it went in. if that fails, take a block of wood and drill a hole in it the same diameter as the top of the shifter. slip the block onto the shifter, and hit the block.

Don't hit it with a metal hammer. I screwed up the top of mine, luckily I had an aftermarket shift **** that didn't need to be screwed down.
