Headunit upgrade or Speakers?
I'm thinking of upgrading the audio system in my L.
The L came with a stock AM/FM cassette radio. In my opinion, it's satisfactory at best. I was going to get a regular CD headunit for it, except I needed the cassette to play my iPod. Now that the lower end headunits come with AUX/iPod input, I'm looking into buying one now.
However, I was also looking at some speakers. The stock speakers are also satisfactory at best.
Should I change the headunit or speakers first? I don't have enough cash right now to get both, but I would like to get one or the other first.
If anyone has suggestions on which model to get, my price limit is around $110.

For that kind of budget, you're better off waiting and saving up to get both. But if you must, do the speakers first. You can get quality speakers for $110 as suppose to $110 for a head unit.
You can also keep your headunit and just splurge on some nice speakers and an amp..

I might sell my JVC headunit for $70. Doesn't play MP3's, but it has an aux-in. I use it all the time with my iPod. It's an old SH55 from 4-5 years ago. Sounds good though. Made a world of a difference after I put it in. I have factory upgraded speakers BTW (the previous owner got 'em when he bought the car). Regardless, the head unit upgrade made music sound cleaner.

Upgrade the speakers first, then get a nice used headunit. I put some JBL 6 1/2's in the doors of my old L and it sounded fine. I bought Impala_SS_Autox's old Pioneer HU and it sounded great as long as I had that car.

I would go with a pioneer deck. If your stock speakers can take it, the deck puts out more ampage then the stock one and will boost the sound. Plus the adjust ability would be sooo much better. EQ settings, bass controls etc. sorry guys, speakers are nice, but the same power from the deck, he's just going to get better clarity. Then when he blows his stock speakers, he will have an excuse to buy better ones...(I have never blown a speaker in my life)
go with alpine or kenwood for the head unit. i like rockford fosgate speakers for the price they are at (same goes for their subs/amps). they pack one hell of a punch.
i owned a 77 nova with a kenwood unit in and 2 rockford fosgate 6x9's in the back deck... loud as hell. but my boys have alpines and they pack an even bigger punch thru the speakers. i am plannin on gettin an alpine cda-9883 for my 2007 impreza 2.5i sport wagon.

Hey, Circuit City and Best Buy's got some deals on stereo decks for Black Friday. They're cheap and within your budget. You should get one then. Hell, I think one of the stores is throwing in free Pioneer speakers with a Pioneer deck. Kill two birds with one stone!

i'd recommend looking into the alpine cda-9883 head unit... go to www.crutchfield.com, it comes with a fit kit, wiring harness, and free ipod cable. great deal for $200 (free shipping too!). better than $204.99 at best buy for only the receiver! i'll hopefully be getting that unit around christmas time. then look into rockford fosgate speakers, good price and great quality (great receiver/speaker combo too).

Thanks for the info guys! One last question, if I decide to replace the head unit, do I also need a Subaru specific harness? Or can I just use the stock one?
