do NOT go to best buy. they try to turn you over in as little time as possible which means short cuts. circuit city horror story here: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/15/c...ed-civic-si-o/
find some tutorials and go at it yourself. if 16 year olds with hand tools (prob a bunch of us on this board did this to a car before we were legal) can do this their first try pretty easily you can too. also look in to this if you want to keep your stock deck...

Thanks for all the advice guys. So, do I need 2 wiring harnesses, car-side and deck-side? Or, do I just need the car-side harness? Is the factory stereo just "plugged in" via a harness? If I just attach the car-side wiring harness to the aftermarket unit, will I just be able to "plug" it into the car?
Since nobody knows what deck you're installing into what car, they usually sell a "carside" harness that has the plug on one end and bare wires at the other end. The headunit will come with the "deckside" harness that has a plug on one end and bare wires at the other. (See the pattern?) You connect the bare wires together to make your own completed harness with the correct plugs on both ends. That's why I said to make sure your used headunit comes with the harness.
You basically just made an adapter harness that let's your car think it's plugging into a stock headunit and the other end plugs into your aftermarket unit. Don't need to mess up the wiring in your car as the adapter harness you just made plugs right in and is completely removable.

So I emailed Daios to see if he can help with the install. If using vampire clips is not ideal, I may hire someone/ask for help with installing this, as I'm not comfortable enough with soldering, and I don't really know much about crimps.
Here's the deck I was looking at:Pioneer DEH-P6900UB

the stereo will come with its own harness. all you gotta do is just connect them color to color (car side to stereo side). connect them using solder or connector, up to you.
i'll be happy to help you if you're in the area

see if you can find this harness.
one side connects to the car side. otherside has a universal plug.
then buy a harness that connects to the back of the headunit. the other end has a universal plug.
so it looks like this:
car side <---> universal plug {---} universal plug <--> head unit side
back in the old days you would need one harness. one end connects to the car side. the other side is just bare wires. then you would use the harness that comes with head unit, which also has bare wires on the other end.
it was up to you to either use bullet connectors or solder them. plus you had to figure out which wires goes to which.
with the universal plug, it's wired up already. so just confirm and plug and play.

I happen to have an Alpine deck with the Ipod box and wire sitting in my office. I think it still has the Alpine to Subaru harness on it and I think I can come up with a din pocket as well.
I also have a mattjk screen an ainet box and a gauge pod if you wanted the deck up there like I had. Sell it all on the cheap.

there are universal plugs like idivinag said but they're $$$ and i wouldnt nkow where to find them these days since circuit city is no more.
circuit used to sell them for $18 each and i believe circuit city was the only company that was allowed to sell them. they were made by Metra but it also had a Circuit City logo on it.
as for circuit city horror stories, the installers take pride in their job/shop so it varies from store to store. and the level of skill of the installers will vary too. i used to work at Concord and we were self-proclaimed best Roadshop in the bay

Didn't mean it in a bad way, just meant something that took up double din instead of having an extra pocket for junk.

I like that double DIN headunit posted. It looks very OEM for an aftermarket piece. I'd say cut some black electrical tape and cover up the "CLARION" logo and it'd look practically stock. I should look into a head unit like that.

where do you live? I'll help you install it. If you buy a stereo new or used (unless its stolen) it comes with the stereo side harness which will have color coded wires. You need to buy a subaru specific car side harness which will have the same color codes as the stereo wires.
What you do is solder and heat shrink (best connection and durability) or crimp butt connectors and heat shrink it and then connect the connectors to the appropriate sides. Here's a pic with what it looks like.
