HDTV - DirectTV or Dish?

Comcast seems to be more expensive than the satellite guys. Does anyone have opinions on how to get some good signal to the kick *** TV I'm planning on buying?

I had both for a while and was more pleased with DishNetwork. More channels, it had DD more often(whick for me is just and important) and was cheaper. I pay a hair over $100 a month for dish HD and love it. Most of the time I'm glued to discovery HD, but it has enough channels to keep me happy.

For real man, Comcast is the way to go for HD. I had the dish for about 1yr. It wasn't bad, I did get many errors. Comcast is the only compant to offer HDTV DVR. It's pretty awesome to have the ability to record in HD 5.1. The reciever has tons of outputs. Component, DVI, S video, USB,. I'm betting you could hook in a harddrive for more disc space. Tons of channels for HD as well. Many of the premium packages include HBO, STARZ, SKINMAX, SHO, ect.

Dude, where have you been? Voom went out of business, they sold it to Dish who are still yet undecided what to do with it. I know this because one of our clients was on the board of directors for Voom. Our client is frecking rich so it does'nt even matter what happened to the company. I'm a dealer for both Dish and Directv and i would stay away from Dish Network, their hardware sucks. Damn check switches, receivers that freeze up, receivers that reset themselves. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Dish. BTW we're one of their Platinum dealers and they do sell good just not work as good.

Well, I'm not a satellite insider such as yourself. And the Voom website is still up, but you are correct, it does state that the service is under the Dish Network banner now.

I'm running out of patience with DirecTV regarding HD. I have been with them for over 5 years and said I'd never go back to cable, but they have really F'ed up their HD strategy. First off, you have to pay $600 up front ($400 after rebate) for their HD DVR which only supports MPEG2 and will not work with MPEG4 when that is available. No clear timeframe or strategy on upgrading customers to MPEG4 compatible set top boxes plus they want $10 per month for minimal HD channels.

Comcast charges $10 per month to rent their HD DVR and has a way better selection of channels. I'm ready to make the switch and probably pretty soon. Too bad as I was really happy with DirecTV before HD.

So you guys all seem to be saying comcast is the way to go. I haven't had cable in years, but now that I have a HDTV on my wall I want more than what this DTV antenae gets me. Most of the people I've talked to love directv, and every one of them hates comcast. None of these people have HDTV yet though.

Seems to me one bad thing about the comcast deal is if you want to hack your hd dvr you're gonna get in trouble since it's a rental.

I'm currently a DirectTV customer, and these are the issues which led me to start this thread, as well.

Thanks for all the input, guys! I really appreciate it.

FWIW, I just bought a 50" SXRD (basically LCoS) set. SWEET...

I used to be a Dish subscriber - I still have it, but I only use it for the non-HD channels, for some reason they come in clearer. Now I have Comcast HDTV, it rocks on the 55" Wide Screen HDTV Only bad part - regular Comcast channels suck ***** as far as image quality goes.

For Dish customers Comcast always offers huge rebates for you to switch over to them. They are suppose to take away your dish equipment or something, but they don't usually is what I understand, you can get like $400 in rebates(I believe it is taken of monthly bills for a certin period of time that totals to $400, not a bad way to go)

So maybe I'll try comcast. I only really want HD channels anyway. I originally was looking at DirectTV because it's base pkg had Speed channel. It doesn't seem like Speed has WRC anymore so I don't really care. I can do without the NASCAR coverage...

I went with a 42" Pioneer. It's the perfect size for where I wanted to put it. It's pretty damn nice, but I bet 50"+ kicks ***.
