It's more the fact that the clutch offers no slippage at all and torque shock, which is what breaks gears, is MUCH more prevalent. Even the HD Street Disk is known as a 'black widow' on transmissions because of how it engages. It's my favorite clutch though, except this last one that was put on a few hundred miles ago. With how aggressive it is it might as well be a 4-puck. Not going with that clutch again; I fear for my motor mounts each time I have to go from a stop.

ACT doesn't sell a stage 1. Keep in mind that STI clutches are little bit different. 
You want the clutch to be the weakest point in the drivetrain. It's disposable and much less expensive to replace than internal transmission components. When it comes to clutches, you always want to get the least aggressive one that will hold the torque you make.
