and AT&T gsm in elk grove/laugna is not that good...

 

i have att and live in sacramento. it's much better than surewest, but everything is. actually, i haven't had any problems at all. they don't have carry over minutes like cingular, but they do have almost the same plan options. also, the deals on the phones are MUCH better than cingular.

 

Man, your fiancee must be really disappointed with our phone tech and services here... Last time I was there they had phones that can capture movies, GPS, dictionary ... I wonder how long before we get GPS on our phones?

 

they have NOKIA GSM tri-band phones with camera capabilities....7200 series and the 3650

Therein lies the rub, AT&T's NON-GSM coverage is among the best in the business, however, they are far from having even sufficient GSM coverage around here, as a lot of the people posting here have stated- much less being anywhere near "totally converted".

Last I checked, AT&T GSM did not even really come close to covering the "major metro" areas, and it required cancelling my TDMA plan and transferring the number to the GSM phone.

But what good is a cell phone if it doesn't wiork when you leave town?

so personally- I'd give a big to AT&T GSM at this point in time

Imagine if Osama Bin Ladens cell phone had GPS coordinates tagging his calls- I'd bet they could be pretty sure they took him out.

in the long run GSM will rule, but now it depends very much on who is your provider, and if you want GSM now in the US, I think you probably want anybody but AT&T.

In the Bay Area, including Sac, if you want to go with GSM make sure the phone uses the 850Mhz bandwidth, which is most of the newer GSM phones. I would also recommend going with AT&T over T-Mobile. T-Mobile leases their towers from Cingular, and from what I hear Cingular has very poor coverage as well as capacity issues. Also over the the next 6 months to 1.5 years AT&T is investing ~$275 million, in the Bay Area alone, into the GSM network. The current AT&T Digital (TDMA) network has about 850 towers in the Bay Area, whereas the GSM network will have over twice that in about 1.5 years. Also with AT&T they are going to be introducing the EDGE technology which will make the data portion of the phones extremely fast, faster than on any other network using data. The Motorola MPx200 and Handspring Treo 600 are very cool phones, with a ton of features.
