graphics card gurus tech question

So lately my computer has been freezing a lot, and I'm getting the BSOD due to a nv4_disp infinite loop problem (anybody know how to fix?).

I go to my Nvidia display control panel and find that I can't find the option to SLI my dual cards (ancient 7900 GTXs) anymore. I also looked in the device manager in control panel and it only shows one card instead of 2. Did one of them just crapped out?

Sounds like you have yourself a registry\driver\service issue.
Go to nvidia's website, download their driver removal tool, follow the instructions and remove your drivers AFTER you have downloaded and 'saved not installed' the 'new' drivers.

That should help you out, that error is most likely a driver issue not a hardware issue.

The driver removal tool isn't available anymore is it? I thought they took it down. You'll probably have to use a 3rd party removal tool, or try to boot into safe mode -> VGA and uninstall it that way.

I would pull each card and leave the other to test to see if one of them died.

6.14.12.8558 <--what it says in the device manager

I d/led the 285.58 driver pack (I was on this as well after experiencing freezing, but didn't get the BSOD until I was on the 285.58 pack.

you can always try going back to 280.26 and see if it clears anything up

NVIDIA DRIVERS 280.26 WHQL

my laptop blue screens a lot lately. where can i look up the logged error for the blue screen? im guessing the computer logs it in a file somewhere.

on my desktop it did it once or twice when i was overclocking and overheating but on the laptop its done it since day 1 and a little more recently.

sorry to hijack your thread :P

in my experience... most BSOD are software related.

if you can, when the screen comes on, there is a long hex number like

0X00000009999

or something like that. grab that and google it. i have fixed numerous machines like that in my previous work by just following the instructions.

remember, other people have solved these issues before you so no need to reinvent the wheel...

As for my cards, I took out the 2nd card and put it back in. Now it works lol. Guess something was loose inside the case.

This is what i was going to suggest, glad it worked for you. I see it more than you think on the SLI and crossfire rigs i work on. Are you getting the bsod still after you reseated the 2nd card and went into windows/nvid ctrl pnl and enabled SLI?
