Hey Bruce,
If you like "melt in your mouth" seabass, go to The House. It's right across the street from The Stinking Rose. It's a nice LITTLE restaurant. Make reservations; it is always packed.

food is okay, but the atmosphere is better.
Now if you want to dine at a REALLY good Italian restaurant, I recommend Acquerello. They're on the Michelin list if that matters to you.

Not North Beach but.... I recently went to Foreign Cinema and had a wonderful meal there with the gf.
If you get a later reservation (after the sun goes down) they play classic movies on their wall in their atrium. Really nice string lights arranged etc... they have those heat lamps too so you won't freeze.
We had:
Kumamoto oysters (FRIKKIN AWESOME!!! if your into oysters)
I had the duck which was great
Gf had the pork tenderloin which was good... but not as good as the duck.
We then closed off the night with some earl grey creme brulee which was simply amazing... you have to try it! I mean... brucelee - brulee spelling is almost there
Kinda pricey but nice setting and good service when we went.
(was under the assumption you were looking for a place for you and the wifey)

there are a LOT of really quality restaurants in S.F. You really can't miss if you're trying to find quality. Make a list.
Fer seafood Waterbar is pretty good, went there last weekend. Pricey, but they have a half dozen ways to have your Dungeness/Lobster prepared....Nice wine list too
Fer steak, EPIC. Pricey as well, but even the damn leftovers melt in your mouth.

If you want a bar and restaurant to take guests to, Momo's near ATT park is pretty good, I've never had a bad meal there. Kingfish is there too if you like and the Chophouse in ATT park is a pretty decent steak place all with parking nearby as the season is over
