It really depends on what type of transaction and activity you are looking to do. +1 for doing research and shopping around for what you need. However, my $.02 cents...

I had negative experiences with Chase, my current big national bank...most recently I had to eat about $70 worth of fees from one of my accounts getting overdrawn by $0.78 ONE day before my paycheck direct deposit...they refused to reverse the charges even though I have been a customer for almost 10 years and always have had sizable balances with them.

I found that local Credit Unions usually work the best in the long run because they are typically member owned, pay more attention to you and not route your calls to India.

I just had a second thought about patelco, what I meant about inconvienience is that there are really not that many ATM's for them around, but then I realized I hardly ever go to the ATM and if I do everyone in a while whats 2 dollars gonna do? and they have free overdraft protection, so i can just use my patelco credit card as my overdraft protection, well time to go to wells fargo and close my account.

Banks are FDIC insured, but that doesn't mean they're owned by the government. There's a big difference.
Whos UBOC?

BTW, not sure what you meant about inconvenient. If you meant accessing your $$$, most Credit Unions are part of a network that let's you access your money w/ no surcharge from a different CU. Totally unlike the banks...

At my CU, with all the networks we're in with, you can access your funds at over 60,000 locations with no surcharge. Just a thought to reconsider your CU.

Let me know if you have CU questions.

My gf has been very happy with Bank of America, but she does have a savings account on a different bank that has a better interest rate.

I'm very happy with my Wells Fargo account, but I'm an employee -- so no fees for me.

If I was in retail, I would

In all honesty, I'm surprised the people at the branches didn't bend over backwards to help you.

Technology Credit Union, http://www.techcu.com

Branch locations as far south as Santa Theresa neighborhood in San Jose, as far north on the Peninsula as Mountain View, and as far east as Dublin.

Tech CU is also part of the Co-Op Network, CU Service center network (so every 7-11 ATM is FREE), also the All-Point Network (Chevron, 76, Costco, CVS, ExxonMobil, Rite Aid, Sears, Target, Walgreens)

More info on access points here: http://techcu.locatorsearch.com/

Hope this helps!

Chase (WaMu) user here. Alright banking, you can start a checking account practically for free. Nice that you have that glass door to "protect" you while you're at the atm too lol.

I used to go to Wells Fargo, but they pissed me off when I'd find my money in my checking account getting smaller and smaller. Turns out those fools had some hidden charges that, unless you ask about, they will keep deducting.

Definitely Credit Union. San Francisco Fire Credit Union. Went public like 2 yrs ago i think. Great service, they will cover and convenience charge at any ATM. Switched to them because i got a great rate on my car loan which allowed me to get the subaru.
switched from WaMu. Had a savings account with them, and they were deducting money from it because it was an "old" account and it would cost me money to switch to the new style one or some BS like that. Took 100 dollarsthat was mine and i never saw it back and the teller i talked to in the local branch could tell me squat about it.
