Ghetto-rig in the hizzousee

So i'm watching TV in my bedroom when my computer restarts.... and before it could boot up it restarts again, and again. I turn off the computer and check out inside the thing to see what's up, I find out that my CPU fan's motor is like crapping out. It's only 8:30PM and nothing to do, and no extra CPU fans laying around? No fear I have a spair 80mm case fan!

This is so ghetto-rigged I had to take pictures and share it!

Made With:

1. 80mm Case Fan
2. 6" Ruler
3. String that you tie baloons with (the plasticy kind with ridges on it)
4. Masking Tape

ACk!!! 129° for what processor? I'm running a 3.2ghz P4E @ 250mhz FSB and I usually run 15° over ambient, as bad as 30° on rare occasions, it's reading 86° right now. Try cleaning up the cables in there a bit, better airflow helps a lot, well that and a decent sink helps a little too.

Cable management I have a bunch of extra stock P4 heatsinks laying around if you need one, you just have to cover the shipping charges

agh, i use AMD It's an athlon 2200+ , with that stock fan i can't expect much... but 86F is CRAZY! I need some fans like that..... looks like I may make a stop at Frys tomorrow. hehe, i'm kinda afraid to keep my computer on overnight like this

damnit... that insanely low temp you get makes me jealous! How much did you pay for a fan like that? i imagine like 50$ or so, oh well :P

You can kinda see I **Tried** to clear up the wiring in there by taping the ribbon wires into a more rounder style, but i guess it don't help much. my whole computer is a heat/noise freak!

$40 at fry's, It's a CPNS7000Cu. I had a Coolermaster Hyper 6 but that thing drove me insane with noise. You can pick up the Aluminum and copper version of the Zalman for $10 less than the copper, many reviews showed them almost identical in cooling and the AlCu is MUCH lighter, but full copper was the way to go for me. I'm also using Cermique(brand) HS compound which took it down a little more over arctic silver. Beware though, the full copper version is HEAVY, and both versions are HUGE, if you do get one, make sure you get it at fry's so youc an take it back if it doesn't fit

I'm using an old antec case with 4 80mm bottom fans sucking in, two 80mm on the back at the processor blowing out, I changed to two fans on the PS to high performance fans, and the 120mm fan on top is blowing out. I use a digital Doc 5 to control everything except the back PS fan and the CPU(the PS and Zalman both have pots to adjust them). The digital Doc has thermocouples that you place all over(comes with 8 of them, one for each fan channel) then you set the temp for each "zone". When it gets above a certain temp it kicks that fan on. I have all 8 termocouples at the same place right by the cpu, and I have them set pretty much at 2° differences so the hotter it gets the the more fans come on, When I'm gaming it gets pretty damn loud, but when I'm just pr0n surfing it stays pretty quiet. At idle the only thing you can hear are the 5 hard drives humming away, actually the one you hear the most is my 74gig raptor, that thing is LOUD compared to the 250gig WDs.

here's this afternoon while it was just sitting here downloading.....ummm... stuff...

And here's tonight while I was playing a little Colin McRae 05, got pretty hot!!! 96° You can see it gets real chppy because my fans are constantly switchign on and off to try and keep things cool.

Just though I'd rub it in ROFL

Go with the Zalman works just as good and is cheaper. That's what I have cooling my XP 2700+ and it is OC'ed.

Whats with the ruler and everything, couldnt you just place the fan on the heatsink and call it a day? Talk about overthinking the problem

no the fan is too large so the fins would rub against the fins of the heatsink, lol.
