Getting shocked when getting out of your car!!

Hi All,

Sorry to make a whole thread about this topic but this is one of my biggest pet peeves. Does anyone else here constantly get shocked when touching any part outside of the car when turning off the motor and getting out?

What the hell can you do to stop making this happen? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I found through trial and error that sliding across the seat when you get out causes a lot of it. I've started to pick myself up off the seat before I get out has all but taken care of it. Although if I go somewhere with my girlfriend she slides across the seat and shocks me.

The mental image of someone jerking around in there seat trying to get shocked is hilarious.

Funny I was just talking to a co-worker & fellow suby owner about this very subject. I usually get shocked when I touch the window on my way out of the car. Ya, the window. I'm thinking my tint is conductive and the seats (& my ***) are generating the static.

haha yeah this used to bug me too. I've found that if I touch the window with my shoulder, my hand doesn't get shocked. Give it a shot.

I have a sure way of not getting shocked:

Before you exit your car while the door is open, touch/hold on to any metal part of the door/frame. Remember, it has to bee metal. Keep on touching the metal as you exit the car. Let go when you have completely exited the car. By keeping constant contact with the car let all the static electricity flow from you to the grounded car. Works every time.

I used to get shocked while closing the door on my old Prelude (but not with the WRX). Since I didn't know the trick described above, I would stick my knee to the door and let my knee cap get zapped b/c there seems to be less nerve endings on the knee cap than on the fingertips. Feels less painful to get zapped on the knee cap compared to the fingers.

I found out I only get shocked when I'm wearing certain shoes.. But I have no idea what makes those shoes different yet.
