Is that your profession of choice, or nessesity? I would never want to be a crooked car salesman.
I have been in Sales (Navy Recruiting) and the pressure placed on you fron the top is tremendous! I recruited for a year and a half, and felt like I aged 10 fold!
I learned one valuable lesson: I will never be involved in sales. Never again!

I don't think that now is the best time to sell cars.
Think about it:
After Sept. 11th '01, most major carmakers offered 0% Financing for, in some cases, all models (including traditionally high-markup sports cars, i.e. Corvette).
Many many people took the oppty to buy new cars, and sell their old cars.
Nobody wanted to fly on airliners, so car travel increased heavily.
Eventually, carmakers began to withdraw most 0% deals, or offered them for fewer cars.
Dealerships were barely making anything selling free money, and the service depts. all of a sudden were doing mostly warranty work and service on newer cars.
Sales then got even slower, since so many people bought new cars in the first round of 0%, that financing rates are getting even lower (in some cases 0%) again.
However, sales for most '03 models remain slow. Few people can afford to buy new cars right now, especially since so many bought new cars already, and only because of 0% financing. Having Chevy and Chrysler dealerships near my Restaurant has allowed me to see and hear a bunch of stuff. I wouldn't want to sell cars right now.

just because a few salesmen are crooked you can not say all of them are. this job is a neccessity for me as well as my father, but he owns a used car lot now. my dad came here poor, and worked his way up for the past 18 years of his life working overtime all the time selling cars. he then became sales manager at a few places then he aquired enough money to get his lot. my dad is not a crooked salesmen, and if u still think so i give u the monkey.

Well, in sales there is not such thing as "overtime". So, does your dad sell cars for only a fair price (Like 2-5 hundred over invoice)?
I kind of highly doubt it. I know that he is into used cars now, but 18 years in the business, I am sure that he has some tricks up his sleeve.
Subaru of Santa Cruz is an exception. I know that it is a bad job, buy hey, somebody has to do it.
In Japan, they don't do the haggle thing. Salesmen are paid by the hour, and prices are set by the manufacture. I like that structure much better.
You should go to Edmunds.com and read the story "Confessions of a Car Salesman". It will really open your eyes.
Many times, the Manager will screw over the poor salesmen by taking the profit off of the end of the loan (i.e. lower upfront and price of the car, higher loan).
Good luck, it is a job that I would not want to do.
