They are actually a (crappy) EFI system now.

I'm thinking there was a N20 bottle on board that ruptured. Like this unfortunate Fox Bodied Mustang a few years back

I don't buy it. One of those tires at hot pressure is well under 100 PSI.
Just not that much potential energy

Dragging caliper heated it up and could have created the pressure to burst the tire. Clearly he knew something was wrong because he was coasting down on a run off.
