Fuel Sensor Problem

So right before Thanksgiving I had a new Walbro Fuel Pump installed in my car. The first time I drove my car after that I ended up running out of fuel as my Fuel Gauge was going down while I was driving, but it never reached the Empty Line and the Low Fuel Indicator Light never came on. I filled up and drove again. Now when I fill up I have to watch the Odometer and see how many miles I have driven and fill up around 300 miles as my Fuel Gauge isn't even getting below the 1/4 Fuel Line and I'm putting in around 13 gallons of Fuel at that point.

So I bought a Replacement Fuel Sensor for the car as it seems that somehow we probably managed to bend the Fuel Sensor (Fuel Float) when installing the new fuel pump.

Now last night I finally got a chance to get the new Fuel Sensor installed, but when I pulled the old unit out and lined it up with the new unit it doesn't look the same at all.

(Sorry for the poor camera phone picture, but my camera batteries were dead)

As you can see it looks like the Metal Bar portion of the Sensor on the new unit (on the Right) is shorter and doesn't have as many angles as the old unit (on the Left). If you look up it also looks like it comes off the side of the unit instead of out from the bottom of the unit like the Old one currently.

So, did Subaru change the design of the Fuel Sensor on the 02-03 WRX since the car was released or did I happen to get the wrong Fuel Sensor?

For Reference, the Fuel Sensor above came as Subaru OEM Part # 42081FE021.

42081FE020 is the original number that is interchangeable with the number you have. Go ahead and use that one. Shouldn't be a problem.
