I have no front plate and have not been bothered in over a year. You should probably be OK, but if you want to be legal have the numbers match on the JDM plate to your CA plate and I think you will be OK.

You may be okay in Japantown, but if you go to Chinatown, you will be cited for sure.

ANOTHER thread about "I'm doing something clearly illegal...will I get in trouble for it???" then there will be a thread in a few months "I hate the police cos I got a ticket for doing something I knew was clearly illegal"

This is getting really old

No front plate/Non-California Front plate = illegal
Tints in front windows = illegal
loud exhust = illegal

If you wanna be ricer fast and ricer furious, go live in Japan.

(a) When two license plates are issued by the department for
use upon a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which
they were issued, one in the front and the other in the rear.

The law indicates that "they shall be attached... in the front and... in the rear." To be perfectly legal, you should mount the two plates they sent you on your car. It does not mention aftermarket or "JDM" plates, etc.

I would imagine that a JDM plate would make you an even bigger target since it is more eye catching than not having a front plate in the first place.

I don't have a front plate on my car and the only time I've been hassled about it was when I was on a group drive with some Subaru's going down Mt. Hamilton. That officer uses it as an excuse to pull over cars that he assumes (probably correctly most of the time) are guilty of tearing up Mt. Hamilton and Mines Road.

the funny thing about that statement is that the LEGAL speed limit on Hammy is like 45-55mph if I'm not mistaken(feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Most people cant go even close to that fast on that road, esp. in its current condition. go figure

Heheh. That would be funny. I believe most of the ultra-twisty stuff is 25 mph. Perhaps the beginning section going up the hill has a higher speed limit.

In the cop's mind, crossing the yellow lines is "tearing up" the road, even if it's at the speed limit.
