A friend's dog hit someone's door, and it got dented...
Hey guys, I need your help/opinion. If your dog hit someone's car and made a dent, I think the owner of the dog would be liable for the damage. But how does the process works? The owner of the car wants 800 dollars to replace the door and get it painted, which is unreasonably steep GIVEN that he can get it paintless dent removed by some good dent guys (http://www.dentcraftpdr.com/Price.html) for much cheaper. If the dent was not on any crease and on a smooth body panel, I'm sure it'll look good as new right? Does my friend have a choice in the matter, to only pay for PDR and not a brand new door? I guess it depends on the dent and how well it'll come out w/ PDR. What would you guys do? How do you think a small claims court judge rule Thanks for the help guys.

And besides, the dog's owner is at fault for the damage. He's not in a position to argue prices or suggest alternate methods of repair. Just take care of it and control your dog better next time around.

ya dude just have them deal with insurance. it is unreasonable for him to get a brand new door. thats rediculous. any shop would just pop the dent and repaint. they would not replace the door. the insurance company would certainly not give him that. i think insurance companies will only replace a part like that if it to far damaged for reasonable repair. a dent i believe qualifies for reasonable repair.
tell the dog owner friend to have the other guy deal with his insurance and i bet they dont give him 800 bucks.
however for you guys to say he should go to a dent puller isn't a something you can make them do even if it is what he should do.
if the dented doors insurance says 800 bucks the dog owners insurance company will def investigate if they think they is way above actual cost of repair. tell the car owner you are just gonna have him deal with your car insurance and he might back down on his price cuz he will know he cant get that much for a door that isnt damaged beyond repair
take pictures to send to his insurance company incase the dude is a douche bag and tries to make the dent worse and blame more dmg than actually happend due to the dog

Hmm, I didn't know the dog owner could involve his car insurance company since it wasn't done w/ his car. Do insurance policies usually cover that?
i really dont see car insurance on the dog owner doing much. simply because it wasn't the insured car that caused the damage but then again i dont know that much about insurance when it comes to pets...
it doesn't hurt to call and ask. Worst case the insurance would just say no, it's not covered. at least you'll know for sure... good luck!

Hey Mike, if the person who owned the car had comprehensive coverage, he could file a claim with his insurance company then have his insurance company subrogate against the dog owner to recoup the car owner's deductible and the insurance company's losses. That would be the easiest thing to do.

what I would do:
step 1: hire Leo and a ninja. I dunno if leo still does PDR, but I bet he would for the right price
step 2: have ninja open locked door in dead of night
step 3: have leo work his PDR magic
step 4: leo and ninja dissappear in cloud of smoke
step 5: "what dent? seriously, that never happened!"
you can save more money if leo happens to also be a ninja.

Dont know about here but when i was in oregon we had animal insurance. It would take care of all expenses for if you hit an animal or if an animal hit your car. If you dont have that on your insurance only one who can claim insurance i believe is the guy whos car got hit cus his car was damaged. In turn the guy who owns the dog will get a bill or a small claims court order. Also the guy who has the dog has no say of how much it cost, That is all up to the insurance company and the quotes from body shops.
