While she has money, she has very limited mechanical skill and no real experience working on cars.

Right now she is looking a heavily modded '98 Supra with ~700WHP, which I'm trying desperately to stop her from buying. ... I just don't see something like that holding up for long, especially without regular love. It's too old and in to high of a state of tune for a novice.

She really wants to do an import. I've already tried to talk her into a Camaro ZL1 or a used Vette and she won't bite. In a perfect world this would be a Automatic trans or Clutchless manual (her rules, not mine)

SO - does anyone know of any beasty cars for sale in the $40K-$50K range? I would say we are talking a minimum of 500WHP for her to be interested.
So.. Your main concern here is that the car won't hold up, won't last very long because of reliability issues??!? Why don't you help her shop for whatever will be the safest in a dramatic crash? Highest number of airbags wins. This makes my brain sad.

I just don't see anything making ~300HP/Liter lasting for more than a few thousand miles.

Personally - I think it's too much car for her... but the mind is made up. I just want to make sure she gets something that won't self-destruct in short order. Would prefer something that has actual good brakes etc so she's less likely to get herself killed
She's been doing the Shift Sector drags and just drove back from Denver in Kentons 1000+HP BMW, so she knows what the power feels like.

Trying to push her towards a few year old AMG Mercedes right now

dude that supra is hella overpriced. tell her to check supraforums if she wants one. i bought my supra with 800rwhp and a super quality build ( brand new oem 2jz, brand new oem getrag 6speed with pumpkin lsd, forged everything, precision single 6766, and pro efi engine management with flex fuel, ccw drag pack wheels, new interior, and full receipts for the whole entire build etc.) for 24k out in texas and had the car shipped here. after towing and smog and all that, i was in the car about 26k

but i agree with most other people, supras are definitely reliable if its a quality build, but if she wants something newer, buy a gtr. best bang for the buck imo.

There are so many reasons to get a GTR or some other newer, AWD, electronic, automatic (one of the requirements) car. Safety and insurability come to mind among other things.

Something like a C63 AMG would still be more than most people could handle, but less killy and silly than that Supra.

Mmmmm i want a 6.3 AMG. I love the 4 door sedan models. Amazing banshee sound when you put the right exhaust on it. **** it even sounds good stock!!

But 17mpg ftl. Even less with a heavy foot.

I said there aren't many options because SHE WANTS AN IMPORT. I assume that means japanese. I never really referred to European cars as imports. No japanese car it's made to handle 500whp safely and reliably. I don't think.

If I had her money, I'd buy a FD and drop an LSX in there.

That supra for 26 is a STEAL!!! How did you smog it lol

Not quite sure about pricing, but SRT has confirmed that they're putting out a Dodge Challenger Hell(o)Cat(Kitty) version, which off the showroom floor makes 707 BHP. I believe the specs say it has a slush box transmission as well.

Heh, limited mechanical skill, doesn't seem to know how to drive a manual very well. Wants 500-800hp car. Seems like a good idea.

Make sure she can afford a $1M umbrella policy on top of the car, she's gonna need it.

I would argue this. Supras, GTRs, Silvias, have been running 500+ whp horsepower for decades with no issues. The 2JZ, RB25/26, and SR20DET motors are rock solid. Safety is all dependent on what the user is doing but the cars are all pretty safe regardless of horsepower.

Just because the EJ25 motors and the occasional Evo have issues with big power builds doesn't mean all the rest do.

Ha, Roo beat me to it. Hellcat fo-sho. Gotta love that magic red keyfob and exhaust note. Gonna demo one ASAP just for the sake of it.

If she's stuck on import though skip the Supra and just get the Lexus.

GTR hands down for something like that. Although it's still tough to find nice ones under $60k.
