I think this is how the Japanese feel about our Corvette... They'd love it if we sold the craziest ZO6 model over there

It does not have a clutch pedal, and has an automatic mode which is enough to discount it for me personally.

I am sure that it is technically "better" but I personally prefer to select my gears using a lever in a standard H pattern, and I like to control engagement of the transmission via a pedal to the left of the brake pedal.

DSG's aside from taking away one major point of enjoyment in a car for me, are insanely complicated as well. There's just no interest, and it is essentially a different way to go about an automatic transmission that you can choose the shift points of if you so desire.

I don't quite understand the lol smiley. It is still an automatic transmission regardless of the torque converter or dual clutch mechanism.

From your wiki link: "Once the driver has selected D for drive..." <-- Where's the fun in that?

While it is a neat piece of engineering, I wouldn't want it in anything referred to as a sports car. A fancy vagina mod is still a vagina mod.

It may shift automatically, but it is by no means a standard automatic (traditional torque converting slushbox). The only real difference between this and a manual is that this doesn't have a clutch pedal or the control of having a true manual. You can still shift this transmission and have it hold the gear just like a manual and unlike a traditional automatic tranny. With the traditional autos, even if you have the gear selector in 2nd to hold it in that gear, when cornering hard or even hitting a bump hard enough it will shift out of the gear you have it set to... Also, this tranny shifts waaaaaay faster than a regular auto and doesn't lose as much drivetrain power like a traditional auto does.

So yeah, technically it is an "automatic" in terms of shifting automatically, but it is NOT anywhere near ANYTHING that a standard automatic tranny is by any shape, function, or form. This sequential gearbox is like 50x better than a standard auto tranny, and better than a regular manual in some ways, yet it will never be as "true" as a real manual... :-/

id take a clutch over saving .1 seconds between shifts...unless im racing for money or on a team, i could give a crap about saving fractions of a nats *** between shifts.

Yeah, I really liked the DSGs Ive played around with so far but not really sure Im ready to fully commit. After living in the city for nearly 2 years Ive never ONCE wished I had an auto, even in the worst city traffic. And unless Im entering some kind of time attack I cant imagine why I'd need that fast of shifts out of my street car

There are major differences between a DSG and a manual - to the point that the only similarity is that power goes in one end and comes out the other at varying, user-selectable pre-defined intervals. It is also fully automatic and designed as such with the ability to control it manually which should also read: the ability to slow it down and take away the only real benefit (lightning quick shifts). There's no way you can shift/decide faster than the DSG so why shift it manually?

Because it's fun... So in that case, I will take the proven, simple and reliable design of a standard synchro-mesh manual gearbox w/ a standard manually actuated clutch. And not just because I don't want to trade an age-old proven design for an electronically controlled complex device w/ TWO non-user servicable wet multi-plate clutches.

The original Ferrari systems with the paddles were electro-hydraulically actuated manual transmissions. I still don't like this because... I cannot manually control it's actuation. Hard to explain.

I dunno - just like I have no clue why someone would want a collection of assault rifles - you don't understand why I gotta have a clutch pedal...
