Please, take it all in stride. Read the sarcasm. I'm serious, but not being a jerk. I'm just playing with ya.
this post pretty much sums it up. ride a single speed and not a "fixed". get a freewheel and at least one brake on there. much more practical, and you can still rock one gear and be a bad ***. as al said fixed gear is a challenge. if that's what youre looking for then go fixed. but if you want to cruise with low maintenance, single speed all the way.

i ride a geared bike as well as my track bike, both have their pluses. for me, an around town fixed gear works very well. where i live there arent many hills, unless i go looking for them, and riding with a gear ratio of 46/15 is perfect for speeding up and slowing down quickly if necessary and cruising around. ive never had any close calls in traffic or anything either.

i also havent ever experienced an internally geared rear hub like it sounds like youre using- so i cant comment on it too much. but it seems like it would be low maintenance too since there is no derailleur or anything... so its probably great!

i wasnt trying to force my opinion on anybody or step on anyones toes... im just glad to see people enjoying bikes, whatever kind it is!
Haha.. No worries, prolly just in response to your "if you're weak" comment. I go round and round about this with my buddy who can not tell me why he likes his fixie beyond saying that it's cool. I would definitely be willing to try it out again sometime, and your idea of a bike meet is pretty groovy - would give people a chance to try a bunch of different bikes! Maybe meet up on the embarcadero, head through the presidio and into marin sometime - never crossed the bridge on a bike before.

Jesus is here? That's bodacious! What are old lady bridge games like? How do you get into that? Do you have to bring your own old lady?

I have been riding my track bike for a little more than a year now. I gotta admit, it's a lot of fun, and it definitely improves your strength and cadence. I do agree, however, it's not practical for places such as SF.

I go to school in San Jose and I mostly rode around there during the school year. It's pretty much all flat in San Jose which makes fixed gears somewhat practical. However, after coming back to SF, I can't really conquer a lot of the hills here, and that's why I got a road bike.

There is no reason why someone would have to have a reason to want to ride a fixie. Don't get me wrong I think there are better solutions for city riding but I look at it the way I see people who skateboard. I ****ed myself up skateboarding for 10 years but I would do it all again with out hesitation.
Now with that said... I HATE THE GOD FORSAKEN HIPSTERS!!!!! I am so sick on their hair cuts, jeans, and beyond UGLY tats!

I agree that they aren't very practical for just riding around, but they're pretty fun for tarcking it up

I'd say overall, a fixed gear bike is good for two things.

riding backwards, or racing in the velodrome against those fixpushers

You guys oughtta try training rollers (the ones without a stand). Those will improve your riding 10000000%

not to bring a dead post back but you guys seem to know a lot about bikes and I am thinking of getting a bike to ride around town with and maybe take to other towns. I was looking at the Windsor Clockwork on bikesdirect and it looks like a steal! I was going to get The Hour but for 30 bucks more the clockwork has a lot going for it. I tried figuring out my dimensions as far as what bike to get and I think I'm a 49mm. I'm about 5'8"

what do you guys think?
