looks much better than the new impreza.

I think that both Mitsu and FHI are going for a more mellow look to attrack new buyers. Not everyone likes the "racer boy" look when they are driving to work in traffic. Notice how many people drive BMWs or G35's? In general "good" looking cars sell better. How many mazda speed wagons do you see? far more than WRX's I am sure.

As it stands now if I were to buy one of the new 2008 model impreza or lancer evo based on looks, I would take the evo hands down.

I don't think it's even possible to compare why people drive a BMW or Infinity vs a Mitsubishi or a Subaru. First off, they're targeted for completely different markets. How many people want a sports car that can afford one vs how many want a luxury vehicle and can afford one? I believe parents, who can afford these cars want more luxury, and the few that do want a sports car, would rather get something that's more "showy" like a ferrari, lambo, maserati, etc.

I think Subies and Mitsus aren't sold as much because,
1) They aren't targeting the whole high MPG trend
2a) The price of a new WRX is a few k's higher than what a parent wants to spend on a car for their kid
2b) People know modification happens with these cars, which makes them tend to stay away from used WRXs.
3) Subies and Mitsus are generalized by the public as streetracer cars, and parents tend to stay away from such cars.
4) The cult following of Honduh and Toyota being the best cars evAr.

I've never seen one, I've seen plenty of Mazda 3 Wagons, but not the 3 Speed wagons. I see WRX's all the time, I'd be willing to say more often than I see Mazda 3 wagons.
