Evo crash @ infineon this weekend, have questions...

Was anyone @ infineon this weekend? Does anyone know the owner of the evo that crashed into the tire wall around turn 8.

I don't know if anyone lurkes the evo forums but if you see anyone post about the crash can you pm me the link please.

My father in law was the guy he tried to pass, my f-i-l held the line through 7-8 while this knuckle head was trying to keep up with a vette. He should have waited for the track to widen out.

Anyway, evo is totalled, and I just wanted to know if this guy would try to pass the blame.
A few Subies today @ Sears Point raceway for the NASA event.

Some poor sap wadded up his Evo 8 in turn 8 somethin aweful. My guys were a couple cars behind him, luckily the driver walked away. Too bad is was his DD, fancy awd can't save ya from n00b manuevers.
he saw it too but thats all i could find.

PikkaGTR 03-01-2010 12:13 AM

looks like he over estimated his abilities and the turn itself
On track, always err on the side of caution

Krinkov 03-01-2010 12:35 AM

Im not even going to rip on the EVO guy here because even if he was being aggressive, Sear Point (old schooler here) is so ****ing unforgiving theres really very few "safe" spots to try to overtake anyone! Theres seriously no run-off ANYWHERE, any miscalculated pass that would end up with a a wheel well full of dirt/grass at Thunderhill will get your car totaled at Sears, clown on him if you like, but I will NEVER do another HPDE there, its not ****ing worth it. :ohwell:

Irish_car_B0mb 03-01-2010 12:40 AM

I'm not mashing the guy, he was driving like a douche and after the fact was trying to say it was one person's fault or another, not taking his own actions into account

And krinkov I coulnt agree more, I keep my car the **** away from infineon cept for the occasional drag night

Thunderhill only has one or 2 spots where **** could get hairy, and you gotta be almost outta control for that. Its a pretty forgiving track. Infin has 0 run off as far as I'm concerned, and being I hpde my daily driver, not for me.

The one thing about the guy in the evo is he was running group 4 so he wasn't a super noob, but def didn't show he wasnt

Lurk 03-01-2010 01:06 AM

Try looking for the guy on www.evoempire.org

There's a good number of Evo driving douchebags on that forum. I wouldn't be surprised if your man was on there.

blue blurr 03-01-2010 08:40 AM

Saw the car up at Works when they were unloading it from the flatbed. Did he hit drivers left, entrance of 8? There were some massive divots in the grass there...

OneManArmy 03-01-2010 09:32 AM

What did it look like. The dude from Works has an evo.

NSM 03-01-2010 07:31 PM

Infineon is a great track and I enjoy the heck out of it. Parts of it are unforgiving, but that just helps keep me focused.

I hopped onto EvolutionM.net briefly but didn't see anything obvious about the wreck. Your f-i-l and the other driver pretty much did as they were supposed to do, hold their line. Evo guy thought he could thread the needle on an off camber & still wet curve. We were hoping that the A4's on board camera caught the wreck but it cut out just before it happened.

I agree there's almost no runoff around that track, but that just means one has to do an even better job of being up on the wheel. There were spinouts all over, from the carousel to turn 11. Got kinda tight at the pit exit more than a few times since there was a river running right across the bend until the final run on Saturday, lotsa ppl getting pushed to the outside and almost onto the grass/dirt It is NOT a place I would take my daily driver, & try to be too brave on a wet run. The drivers got some harsh words from the NASA officials in the meeting afterwards. The Evo driver couldn't pass the blame, it was all him and his wrecked car is the proof.

Nevertheless SEARS POINT is my favorite track, esp since its all I've driven. haha.

wrexr 03-01-2010 10:26 PM

You got's to respect the es's!
Oh yeah, I bet this guys mistake started back at turn 7 or earlier.

And that folks is why I don't go to Sears Point

Just too much concrete to hit

PaulSTI 03-02-2010 09:32 AM

I talked to my contact at Works just now. He told me that the driver had chosen to use slicks because the track was drying out. Sadly, there was a puddle on the outside of turn 8 and he lost it. From what it sounds like, the driver is fine, bumps and bruises only.

I agree, Sears Point is a challenging track, I've driven in several times, and the S-curves on the back stretch (of which turn 8 is one) are among the most dangerous things I've ever experienced in a car. The problem is that these turns require a specific turning point at a specific speed, however they look deceptively like they don't require as much of a turn and therefore can be taken at high speed with little or no braking. The trick is a brief firm braking action upon entry, and a specific amount of turn-in.

I've seen a lot of hate for Sears Point in this thread and in other threads, but it's a far more appropriate track for our cars than Thunderhill is (which I've also driven). I guarantee that you can post better lap times relative to very powerful cars on Sears Point if you know what you're doing. On Thunderhill, you'll get blown away by straightaways that FR driving Corvette owners can use all 550hp, which they can never do on Sears Point. Respect the track, but over-simplification by saying it's a bad track is inappropriate.

Irish_car_B0mb 03-02-2010 09:36 AM

Who is going to thunderhill in april?

I will be up there and if the wife doesn't go I 'd be willing to share a room with someone to split cost.

I'm going up both days so let me know.

Glad he's okay, maybe next time he will hold off on the slicks... :punchy:

I love Infineon.

The high risk of damage on runoff just means you gotta drive with more margin of safety, or be even more ready to lose the car in a crash.

And while the esses may be described as "deceptive", this is part of the challenge. As skill that many people don't seem to put as a high priority for learning is reading the road (undulations as well as conditions), and being sensitive to the cars weight transfers. The fact that 8/9/10 are all linked really catches people out... but controlling a swinging weight is still a part of driving skill. The problem is weight transfers are never taught to people besides "straight brake, turn in, hit the apex, unwind".

If the conditions are risky, go slower.

I understand that for some people that level of self discipline is hard, so it would be better just to avoid infineon all together. To each his/her own.

But really, the rhythm of Infineon is just amazing. When you're in the groove, the car just dances.

LGT Mark 03-02-2010 05:01 PM

For some reason I feel more comfortable driving near walls than dirt, so I had a blast at infineon even when it was pouring rain. I didn't even notice any of the walls until turn 10. It required alot more finesse to combo together the turns, compared to T.hill where it's more 1 turn at a time and you could potentially dive bomb every apex.

I could see it being stressful if you're surrounded by sucky drivers, maybe that's why the cheap Track Groups don't go there as much. I don't think I would want to go there for a $125 NCRC day, tho at that price it would be hard to pass up.

I'm a little afraid at Infineon, I love Thunderhill, my 2 cents.

I'll not be afraid @ Infineon when I'm tossing the R8 around there.
