DownPipe... Is it really all that bad??

Well, here's a scenario...

having an aftermarket exhaust and installing an uncatted DP... is it really all that bad? can you really get pulled over for that? is the smell really all that bad and noticable? seriously.

I have smelt catless, and yes it is stinky. It also depends on ECU mods and octane levels cause some (to ME) seem stinkier then others.

catless stinks. If i'm stuck in traffic, i have to roll up my windows depending on which way the wind is blowing. You can also smell other people's cars if they are running no cats.

Go ahead and remove the cats. The environment and the oxygen we breath isn't worth those 10 horses!

OK well here is what I find stupid. The fine for running catless and the fine for replacing the three OEM cats with one "hi-flo" cat is essentially the same. Why pay the extra money for a catted downpipe when you are running the same risk?

maybe the smell isn't so bad that it's easy to identify the vehicle running catless? if it makes detection a little more difficult, then the catted version is worth it.

People typically get pulled over for the exhaust being loud, not smelly. Then depending on how the cop is feeling you get the visual inspection and they find that you are running catless or with an aftermarket cat which is just as illegal... So again the cat doesn't really help that much against getting pulled over and doesn't help you at all after you have been pulled over because it isn't OEM.

no it's not bad at all. I can stand behind my car at idle and not even smell a thing unless i stick my face right infront of my exhaust. Also i've had a friend drive my car and i was right behind him in his and i couldn't even smell it that much. Compared to other catless cars wrx's don't really stink as much. My friend catless gsx is alot worse.

so then it's the drivers who are to blame...for sporting grapefruit shooters on their cars.

soooo.. would having just the downpipe uncatted and the up catted make it better in terms of smell?
