Door to door newspaper sales-really a scam?

So some kid knocks at my door this evening... Gives me the whole talk about graduating high school and needing money to go to SJSU. Tells me he lives in the apartment complex and that the neighbors are helping him out. He needs X amount of points to get X amount of money. All I have to do is give me 20 bucks in cash or check and if I want to cancel the newspaper subscription, I can. I will also get a receipt so that I can claim it on my tax forms showing that I am helping out this kid. He informs me that I'm not buying a car from him and it's 'ONLY' 20 bucks.

I say 'sorry kid..but I can't even afford texts books myself.' He tells me that I look well off, as I'm not wearing any shoes, my house looks like a wreck, and that I can spare 20 bucks and that its not that much. (.... if you can say that its ONLY 20 bucks..you've never been that broke).

Then he pulls out the big guns and says that the neighbor upstairs didn't even want a subscription and that the neighbor gave him 20 bucks and now he needs a place to send the newspaper and ask me to do him that favor.. I tell him that I don't even need the newspaper and that it would end up as garbage....

He also gave me his name.. I googled the name to see if it was a common scam name.. and it turned out to be a movie stars name.. ?!?!?

He looks at me all annoyed then leaves... doesn't even thank me for my time.. all while my 18 lb dog was moving around in my arms...

oh.. and are these scams... google says yes..

I have had some kid try and pull that. Banged on my door several times (rude). Said he was my neighbor and he needed the money for his school and I told him "I am unemployed and I can't do it" (which I was) and he got all rude. So I told him that he better drop the attitude if he expects anyone to give him the time of day.

What a jinx! I just had some guy try and sell me something when I was talking to guy that was picking up a cycling trainer I had for sale on CL. I guess he saw that my front door was open because the buyer just got here and we were in my entry way and the dude yelled from 100' away and then approached my door with both us looking at him like "WTF?!?" I don't even know what he was pushing because I told him "I'm not buying anything" right when he got to my front porch.

I don't even open the door for them. I don't care how sorry his/her story is. Also, such kids could be working for people who want to know what you have in your house. Call me paranoid, when I do open my door for a stranger, I'm usually packing.

This. I don't even bother opening the door a lot of times. If I don't like the way a person looks, I ignore them altogether; if they look legit or have a cohesive story, I still talk to them through the door. The door only opens if it has to (like to receive a package or whatnot).
