Dog owners - raw diet

There are many dog lovers here. Anyone feeding their dogs a raw diet?

Nope just rd diet can food mixed with dry food. One thing I feel really makes a difference, if you have a dog disposed to hip troubles is that shark cartilidge or whatever that is super good for joints. Ive seen that work

My good friend feeds her dog a raw diet. He's very healthy and very well behaved. She buys him meat from Whole Foods so he actually eats better than most people.

INCORRECT!!! Raw meat is NOT a raw diet. The diet must still be balanced in terms of vitamins, minerals, and some carbs.

Proper raw diets are great but not essential. If you have a large dog I actually recommend supplementing the kibble with raw, unless you enjoy being broke

If your dog is not a working dog, just go for a good quality kibble from a brand like Innova, CA Natural, Merrick, Natural Balance, Wellness, Natures Variety, or Prarie.

Even though grocery store (WF counts as a grocery store!) advertise "quality" you should go for a dedicate pet supply store (non chain). Although if you do wish to prepare a raw diet rather than buying premixed raw food, consult the book by Dr. Pitcarin, it has excellent information and recipes.

I feed him Prescription Diet S/D dry food and C/D canned. ****s a ripoff but its on vets orders.

Ive heard raw diets can get pretty expensive or space consuming if you buy the foods in bulk and store in a freezer.

Vet diets are BS, just Hills/Science Diet in a fancy bag and a new name.

Find out WHY the vet has prescribed that specific food (low ash, low protein, yada yada yada) and take that to a quality pet supply store and get something GOOD that fits the bill.

I make no apologies for my consistent comments in this thread. I was involved in quality pet supply sales for 4 years and it is still a passion of mine even though I wasn't able to re-enter the industry after moving. If a customer said that their vet prescribed the veterinary formula because value X was below Y%, and it didn't have ingredient Z, I'd sit in the back room analyzing all of our foods to find one that met those criteria and had better quality remaining ingredients.

I feed her Innova for the last two years. I've noticed that when we switch bags of food, her poop changes for a few days. That got me thinking about quality control of the food.

I gave her some raw chicken a couple of days ago and she loved it.

I'm researching and have read a bunch of stuff. We cook at home quite a bit so the added cost and effort isn't a concern. With all the dog owners here I figured someone is feeding raw.

I found that when I got my dog the 30 pound bag his poop was subpar towards the end of the bag, but fine when I got a new bag. I went to he 15# bag and the issue went away. I'm thinking it was the food going bad.

It may also not be the right food for her. I can't eat much Indian food without farting up a storm! Switch her to CA Natural, one of the simplest quality foods, and a good go-to food for dogs with sensitive digestive tracts.
