Do you need uppipe, downpipe, midpipe to pass CA smog? (was: NOOB question)

Just wanted to know for the smog test. Do you need up pipe and down pipe and mid pipe to pass it? Or u can just use your stock down pipe and pass the smog test? Thx.

Yes, as long as you have no CEL codes and the stock downpipe, you will pass.

Well...you could get the 0.1% chance that the tech will be super **** and see a shiny uppipe which could fail the visual...but I doubt that would happen.

If you're ever worried....just throw on the stock dp and run it around on the highway for a few min to get it super hot

you need to drive for more than a few minutes though. coolant temps need to be at operating temperature and not just warm.

What about the missing EGT sensor which normally goes in your stock uppipe. Can you put your Cobb AP into COBB "stock mode" without triggering that trouble code? Or do you have to use that resistor trick? I dont use any resistor right now.

2.2k-Ohm resistor mod FTW!

now that you mention the resistor trick ... where can i get the diagram for it .. or how do i install it ... cause when i bought the car the owner told me that they had that done but it's still throwing the cel code that its not working... someone told me that it might be done wrong ... any info would be helpful thanks .... im new to this car

it will trigger a cel even with the resistor. my bad.

The reason for the cel with the resistor is that it makes the EGT a constant ~1500F degrees. I believe with most base maps the condition is that under high load and low RPM the EGT reads too high and throws the CEL. The only way to "fix" it is either go back to stock or have the EGT CEL condition ignored in the map.
