Do car salesmen make money?

it all depends on if they sell it at the MSRP, or the markup price, if they sell it at the MSRP, its only like $400 or so going to them. i was trying to get a job at the dodge dealership in redwood city, and overheard one salesman say another made $10K off of a Viper sale!

Yes they do. However, many of them in very hostile, dirty ways.
There's the very rich car salesmen who sell like crazy under their schemes and some even selling very expensive exotics.
Then there's the poor Joe car salesman who can't sell a car cause they scare off customers with their desperate attempts on making a deal and/or get their business stolen by the big shot rich car salesman.
Most car salesmen would kill each other for profit.
I think that's how it usually goes.....

My fiancee's dad is one and he can't even support himself, let alone a family.
But then he has his two "best friends" who live in million dollar homes and drive AMG Benz's. Its kinda sad.

My father was selling cars for a while. He did OK, but then he's been a salesman most of his life and cold sell ice cubes to eskimos. His problem with selling cars was all the crap that goes on behind the scenes... it took the fun out of it, and he decided that he just didn't want to be characterized as a car salesmen anymore. Oh yeah... he hated the internet... makes that job so much harder when people have so much information at their fingertips. Everything from model comparisons to dealer invoices and knowing about upcoming promotions before the salesmen does.

Yeah.. some are just better at the game than others. It's a very tricky game at that. I don't like tricks especially involving with car salesmen LOL

i have been selling subaru's for one year now. i have been selling cars for 3 years total. where i work we don't do the traditional way of selling cars. in fact 90 % of my sales are referral business. i own 2 subarus. i love my products that i sell. as a matter of fact i bought them before i started working for subaru.
depending on where you work... yes you can make tons of money. but the ones who are the most successful are the ones that are consistent(ever wonder why you see so much turnover in dealerships?). meaning building good relationships with clients even after the sale. lately i have been reading a book by zig ziglar... totally changed my way of life in terms of selling.
when i sell a vehicle i know what information is out there and i present it to all my clients during the sales process.(internet, media etc.) which is advantageous to both sides.
so to answer the question.. yes they do make money. but its the ones who are consistent and staying busy that are the successful ones. as i learned a long time ago.. ethics should always be first and foremost... like zig ziglar said in his book.
"the more people you help, the more successful in life you will be."
once i understood that philosophy, my whole life changed... and not just in terms of selling cars.
