Dinner Idea?

My friend from the marines just got back into the area recently and it so happens to be his birthday week too so I want to take him out to a restaurant to have dinner and catch up, he just went to Alexander steakhouse and The House in SF for dinner recently so those are out, throw me some ideas so i can think of somewhere to take him.

All depends on what part of the bay you'll want to be in.

San Carlos has Town which is a nice spot.
If you want the gastropub thing you can try Martin's West in RWC or Scratch in Mt View.
Reposado in Palo Alto is also nice. Can be a tad noisey.
Los Alto Grill is another nice one. Same owners as Houston's in SF
What food did you have in mind?

Fishermans Wharf San Francisco Seafood and Crab Restaurant - The Franciscan Crab Restaurant Great seafood, right on the water, great views.

Alpine Inn - Portola Valley, CA decent burger, great fries, cheap beer, outdoor seating in the back.

Dosa South Indian Cuisine high end south indian food.

Tigelleria in Campbell is excellent italian.

Slow pace (on purpose, but its not for lack of service which is spot on) can get a bit noisy cuz its fairly small (think <20 tables), but super friendly and great atmosphere.

Risotto with mushrooms and the salt crusted whole fish are ridiculousy good.
