did I get a virus? WTF?

Okay, so I recently got an auto update on my Windows XP. Then after the reboot my Windows Key seems have gotten 'sticky' from time to time. As in I would press certain key and things would pop up without me hitting the Windows Key. For example, Utility Manager would pop up by pressing 'U' without me press and hold the Windows Key. Or if I just set there idle, I would see the Start menu pop up and gone as if pressed the Windows Key.

HELP! :help:

maybe turn off the sticky keys (i think it was the shift key?)
have you tried refreshing a couple times? my cousins had the same problem with their R key.

Good luck Leo

yeah, press the shift key 5 times would bring up the sticky message box and menu. No, sticky is not on...

What worries me is even if I just sit here and not touch the laptop I would see the start menu pop up from time to time...

disable your internet connection and see if it still does it, it could be some driver mishap, i updated vista home, gave me some wrong drivers and programs started acting funny, my sound didnt work lol. but try and unplug your internet and see if it still does it, if it does then you dont have to worry bout anyone using like a remote desktop on you lol cuz that would suck. i say reinstall windows dont update, u dont really need the update anyways lol they're just microsoft's secret way to make your life even more miserable! gl with that!

You can uninstall the updates. Do you have a spyware/virus scanner? I'd keep those more up to date than Windows itself.

You can try using Windows Live One care. It's an online virus scan, registry scanner. Just google it and use IE, since FF doesn't support it.

Also, a really good free anti-virus, is Panda ActiveScan, and it scans through the internet.

If those don't fix it, just do a system restore to a date prior to the update.

okay, it's really stupid, but the problem seems to be gone now...

i went to windows auto update website to see my update history and didn't see any driver related update. then i 'tried' to go to dell website to download the original keyboard mouse drivers. But get this, the stupid 'L' logs me off just about EVERYTIME! So I tried to manually do another Windows update and it was asking me to update that 'Genuine' blah blah blah and something 'Advance' blah blah blah. But I remember doing that the very first time when I was doing the Windows update. (I am on SP3 now)

BTW, I did disable the network and the problem was still there until I updated Windows... I am finishing off other updates and we'll see how it goes...

okay, downloaded the latest keyboard and mouse driver for my laptop from Dell and also disabled the Windows Key. Maybe should have done only one at a time to root cause the sucker.

Bad keyboard maybe? Have you ever spilled anything on your keyboard? You can try unplugging it and seeing if it happens still. Sometimes the conductive paint used in keyboards get crossed due to corrosion from spilled drinks..

nope... and it's a laptop so I can't really unplug it...

however, I ran with the above 'fix' i had for 30 minutes without a problem... now i removed the Windows Key disabling registry key to see if the driver itself fixed the problem....

alright, just few minutes after removing the registry key the stupid problem popped up again... temp fix would be just keep the registry key to disable the Windows Key but its still a concern of possible bug/virus/warm/blah blah blah...

You have it backwards windows live one does not support Firefox. Why would micro$oft want to support some other browser.
