Angry Data recovery companies

Any body have any local recommendations?
I have a 1TB Simpletech Pro Drive that failed on me today.

I'd like to try to get the data back before I submit a RMA request for a replacement drive under warranty.

Let me give you a few pointers.

1)ALL data companies will charge betwene $500 and $1000 just to LOOK at the drive. That is not recovery just to look it over and say "yep we can get the data off"

2)Costs run between $5-$500 a meg of recovered data, depending on if its RAID, if there is fire damage, etc...

Last time I had a data recover was at work, we had 130megs recovered (files not backed up) at the cost of $8500. So you need to decide if the data is THAT important.

Next time I would suggest you put up a server or some kind of redundant backup system. I personally here at home run a windows 2003 server with raid 5+1 hotswap, dual backed up to a raid 0(mirrored) external dual USB drive. This way I can loose a total of 2 drives on the raid AND one on the backup raid and still have my data safe. Then again I do have over 3t of data here at home.

I've actually done some data recovery before, my friend's harddrive crashed, I was able to use software to analyze the hardrive and managed to recovery a good sum of her data. It's not really that difficult.

+1000000 for DriveSavers. Best company for data recovery, period, imo. Be aware that normally the people using this type of service have critical business documents/records/etc, or are government organizations, not personal home HDD's, and therefore the services do not come cheap.

does the drive spin but click? you may be able to put it in the freezer and get it working.. .

If it doesnt spin, tap the drive. If its not getting power, you need to decide whether or not its worth $2000, since that is likely the neighborhood you'll spend on a simple drive failyure.

If you havent already scanned the drive for file system errors, give it a shot before you plotz down $$$ or $$$$ on recovery.

I've not tried the freezer thing, but a couple corner taps on a desk got a server drive unstuck long enough for me to run a drive cloning.

Oh, if it seems like its working, it could just be bad sectors. Are you familiar with Linux?

You can boot into knoppix, it seems to recognize anything. Then mount the disk, copy everything off and dismount.
