Cross-Contry Move - Any tips?
Cross-Contry Move - Any tips?
Cross-Country Move <---- I'm dumb I know.
Mid-July I'm going to be driving my car to Johnson City, Tennessee. The plan is to go through Salt Lake City to Denver to Kansas City and then into Tenn.
Anybody ever done a drive like that? Any tips?

Air conditioning and lots of window washer fluid. They got bugs you like you wouldn't believe in Kansas. Friends of mind drove from Colorado Springs, CO to Clarksville, TN and they said going through Kansas was the worst.

you'll get good roads that have yet to be corrupted by 16 year old bay area punks without cops hiding in the blind turnouts!
All those tips have been duly noted
I went and visited before I committed to it and it was nice enough...in spring. Defiantly a different world.
Lol, I'm ready to get out of here for a while, I just want to leave already.

make hotel reservations now; i liked Hampton Inn, Extended Stay America. getting a hotel at the last minute REALLY cuts down your choices, especially if a stoopid conference/seminar is going on in a city (yeah, true story--hotels sold out for 45 miles). plan it out, e.g. your stops etc. have goals but leave some wiggle time for meals, and stretching, maybe a catnap or two.
hopefully by now, you know how far you can comfortably drive in one stretch. for me, when i moved to Chicago (and then back again), it was a max 13 hours driving a day...and that was stretching it. Usually about 11 hours a day driving.
do you have someone driving with you? If not, think seriously about getting books-on-audio to pass the time, unless you're a music junkie and have your ipod/mp3 player fully loaded.
The car will most likely be hot...wear shorts. don't wear flip-flops--i got stares in Salt Lake City when I strolled into an Applebees doing that.
Good luck!

The people in TN are absolutely amazing; they still say "hello" to strangers.
You gotta go to the Cumberland Gap area in the fall...it's to die for!

Take Hwy. 80 as far east as you can. Just did a road trip out there Friday afternoon - to Omaha, NE by Saturday evening - I saw ONE CHP on the Donner Pass area, and one Wyoming Highway Patrol staring at a truck who decided to drive straight when the navigator should have directed him >right 5 into straight straight straight...
See my thread in the Photography forum. 421 miles in one tank, and only used ~13.745 gallons to fill the tank on the SVX I was driving. That was in Chappell, Nebraska, and it took me all the way into Omaha without another re-fill.

I have land here and I was just going to leave the Cali plates so I wouldn't have to deal with passing a smog. Unless it's easier to pass one in TN, then I'll make the switch. I mean if its just a stupid idea to keep the California plates then I'll see what I can do.

Get rid of those CA plates and you'll understand what being released from prison feels like.
