Cows on the road at night ... again ...
.. the difference this time between a totaled car and no damage was low beam vs high beam ...
Driving home tonight on a country road I rounded a corner and saw a solid "something" in the road at the end of my high beams where there shouldn't have been anything. I braked and as I got closer I saw the outline of a cow in the road ... for some reason I switched from high beam to low beam and suddenly realised I could no longer see the beast ... returned to high beam and could see it again, plus another one in the grass on the right side of the road. And guess what, these two cows blended really well because they were the same colour as the road - a dark grey.
Luckily this incident ended okay - AND it answered a question that had been bothering me for two years and three months (almost to the day). And that was "why hadn't I seen that other cow in time to be able to avoid it?" Now I know, low beam vs high beam ... and driving (too) close to the car in front.
I stopped at the first sign of life - a local restaurant - and got them to phone the sheriffs' office, because that stretch of road is not open range. Hopefully no one hit those cows!
Those of you who know my story / history will understand why this evening's event spooked me a little bit.

Glad to hear you're alright Jane!!
I'm thinking a nice set of Hella FF1000's would look VERY good right now on the front end of your car. Between that and your high beams, you'll be blinding the cows from 1/4 mile away...definitely gives you some time to brake.
