no its not... its perfectly reasonable.

-first of all they do give discounts on regular products to their members b/c of the suscription nature of costco membership. you are buying into a membership that lets you buy stuff in bulk.

-costco only gives you the choice of 87 or 91, so they save money in transporting both.

-the process of buying gas is streamlined. they dont supply you with windshield washer squeegees or towels. get your gas and go.

-credit card/debit card/atm card only. they want you out of there asap.

-their locations are built on costco property already, so they dont have to pay for the space JUST for the gas station.

it's cheap gas, so everyone wants some. thats why the pumps are always full in the afternoon... usually there's a wait for a pump. what other gas station do you know has this "problem" of people waiting in line for gas?! because the whole operation is so streamlined and so popular, it is evident that costco can sell quality gasoline for cheaper than the people who make it at their own refineries.

my $0.02/gal comment, this is not factual or true or whatever, it's just my reasoning.

The ONLY difference between brands is the additives. 76 refines its gas and puts it in a pipeline in Texas. 5 minutes later it takes gas out of the other end of the pipe on the east coast. The gas it gets out could have been refined by Shell, Texaco, or whoever else uses the pipeline. Once the gas is out of the pipe, the company that's going to sell it mixes in their secret blend of additives and puts it in the tank. I'm sure Costco doesn't add anything to the gas. So when you pay $.20 more for Shell all you're paying for is detergents and whatever else they put in there, not better gasoline.
