my only guess is that's what they needed to get the compression up for the diesel. pretty cool. wondering if the "hole" in the piston is needed to the spark/glow plug, for the Direct Injection, or what. be afraid of the potential interference on that engine, but i believe that was a timing chain, no?

The hole in the piston is essentially a diesels combustion chamber. On TDC the pistons flat surface is flush with the top of the cylinder wall. This is needed to reach a high compression ratio usually around 24:1 to ignite the diesel fuel. It is also shaped a certain way inside the chamber because the direct fuel injection sprays directly into the hole.
