computer help needed! my internet is suckin

I got a virus a couple of days ago that my A/V couldnt get rid of.

New HD it is! (needed one anyway... had 2.9gig left on my old 30gig)

after getting all my stuff set up, i've discovered that there is something wrong with my internet connection although i have no idea what's causing it...

im running on a cable modem & it appears my connection starts off normally at times then suddenly plunges to less than 56k speeds then even disconnects with a fair degree of regularity...

The NIC i have is whatever came with the computer which was never an issue until now & the router im using is a Linksys & the cable modem seems sound so now im left with calling Comcast (which may take the rest of my life before i get a response/human being).

What could be causing this or what can i do about? i hate to even conceive that i have to call Comcast...

theres a windows system file that virus's write crap to to mess up your internet connection. it writes sites in it to block your computer from accessing them. like all the antivirus software update sites. that happened to mea year ago. maybe thats what happened to you too. forgot the filename tho. u gotta delete all the sites that the virus wrote in there.

where would i find that list?

& would i need to do that with an entirely new HDD?

after i put in the new HDD i put up all the def. stuff(firewall, a/v) & my A/V says the virus is gone now.

but when i initially got the virus it detected it but could NOT get rid of it...

what happens is that the virus loads up into memory. and since it installs itself into the windows system directory, it is sometime protected by windows from being deleted.

anyways, at work, what i do is take their HD out of their machine (laptop and desktop) and connect it to a portable drive i have and scan it with my machine.

gets rid of 99.999999% of the buggers.

if you are around hayward, bring me you HD (IDE only, no SATA connection yet) and i'll scan/clean it for you.

another tip: make the account you use on windows XP and 2000 as a LIMITED user account.

with this, if you get hit by a virus, trojan horse,, malware, etc, it will want to install itself into the windows system files. but by running a limited account, it will be stopped by default.

make another account that is an ADMIN one and you can add/remove software and hardware that way.

some motherboards (like miy Asus) have a boot-up virus protection, that can detect virus that would normally be protected while in Windoze

Let's see...

Try THIS

when you sign up and post your log, they'll help you get rid of anything that might not be so friendly to your computer.

It worked for me in order to get rid of a nasty spyware program called SCNEX

There's not a single anti-virus program that can detect SCNEX, let alone remove it.

These guys took care of it...or at least showed me how.

Do you have a bootleg of XP? That could have a virus embedded inside.

happened to me

Same thing happened to me a little while ago. My computer just stopped connecting to comcast. I got on the phone with them and they had no idea what was wrong...told me to contact microsoft...lol. Then all of a sudden my computer starts to shut down on it's own. Programs start locking up and everything slowly went to crap. I then booted in safe mode and totally re-installed xp. Wiped everything. The first thing I did was install the latest version of nortons...everything has been fine ever since. Lately Nortons has been catching a lot of trojan horse viruses that I stumble accross every so often just by access web pages.
