clutch/flywheel install?
I am coming up on 60K and was thinking of replacing my clutch. I have had an STi flywheel sitting in my garage for a long time, and have not installed it yet. I was going to take my car in, with all the mods removed, and have them look at the clutch because of the shudder problems. Should I just forget about it and get a new clutch anyway, and install my flywheel as well? Any suggestions for shops to install the clutch and the cost? Thanks.

MPJ did mine back in January, they got it done quick and not terribly expensive.
I expect you'll have a hard time getting a TSB shuddering clutch replacement with that many miles on it- I'd say go ahead and pay to get the goods you want put in there.

I-speed does aftermarket clutch swaps for just under a grand. As for the shutter, it's hard to get that warrantied. The service department really likes you and your car must have an "outstanding" record.
I could never get the swap done on my car, but I've hard all kinds of dealer issues. I would recommend santa cruz for any warranty work, but I would consider an after market pressure plate. If you can get away with a stock friction disc then use that. However the pressure plate will give you the clamping power you desire.

Just a to let you know that the STi flywheel is even lighter than the Exedy flywheel that I have in my RS conversion. Also, a lighter flywheel will also run you the risk of misfire codes. I know I get it all the time. This makes it a pain when needing to register your car for a smog check.
But I-Speed would be the place to get your aftermarket flywheel and clutch installed.

S-Squared in Sacramento can do the install and get parts.
Give them a call, or email, and they'll take good care of you.

Thanks for the responses. I am a little worried about the missfire codes, especially since I am also running a lightened pulley. I have really been debating lately as to whether or not I even want to install the flywheel.

I do not have a ligthened pulley or underdrive pulley. I only have a lightened flywheel. At this point, from what I have gathered, all lightened flywheels will give misfire codes.

CEL's doesnt end of the world of mods. It is what we have now specialy when you alter OEM stuff and nothing is permanent and all cars are not the same when it comes to CEL's triggering.

MPJ was my first thought, especially since I don't really know of any other shops. My only concern is the drive from Vacaville. By the time I get there, my car will be so hot that you won't be able to touch it for some time. I almost have to leave it there over night, which I really can't afford to do. I guess that I will have to drive just about anywhere, so maybe this isn't a valid concern. I will shop around and get back to you.
The 5MT STi lightened flywheel is 5.4kg, which is about 12lbs. I would like to drive a car with a lightened flywheel to feel the response, but I am trying to weigh the benefits of the flywheel versus the lightened pulley. Tons to read.
Thanks,
Chad

You will feel more of your car when if you suddenly let off the gas. Remember that your engine will be much more repsonsive becaue of the reduced rotating weight and the response . I have a lightened flywheel in my car and I usually drive it really hard. So you will give your tranny a beating. But I can drive it smoothly also if I need to.

tranny beating ?
not true
.. Launching at 6k rpm will.
Run a poll on who has a broken tranny because of a lighten flywheel and you will be surprised on the results.
